Mt Bachelor Friday, 2/21 Holy She-it!

Imagine you enjoy the snow, but aren't really hardcore and don't like it when the weather is too abrasive. It's been a dry winter with lots of hard pack and then it snows something like 10-15 feet over three weeks and all the local weather guys are shouting:

Go up Friday!!!

Unfortunately, you are not going to be alone. Especially when 20+ MILLION drought-stricken people in California hear that and, heck throw in Washington State for good measure and now you can get a feel for what Friday was like here (and all weekend). Seriously, Robert blamed me for posting all these nice snow photos of Mt Bachelor over the years for what has happened. I think he may have a point. Even Admin gave up a day with Bobby Danger and came out here once. Guys were running over me from behind like it was Squaw Valley or something! It's like they aim at you to try and get around you they're so powder starved! Why didn't you just drive up all the last three weeks for God's sake???

I came up a little late because we tracked out all of the available terrain except Northwest Express, which I figured would open after 11. I was right. There were already a ton of cars in the lot.

Usually the Cone has more tracks on it at 9:30 but you guessed it, EVERYBODY was waiting for NWX to open. It hadn't been open for a week and it had snowed 6 feet since then so that's why I was there…

After a few runs on Outback, it was time to line up and wait for the sign to turn. The expected Chinese Fire Drill ensued and I was lucky to avoid an ass-over-tea kettle crash right in front of me on the way down to the bottom of the lift. The tracks you see were from the high traverse from Outback Chair the day before. We traversed over here all the time before they built NWX about 10 years ago.

Getting up higher, I'm thinking go right, towards the West Bowls, so is everybody else.

I didn't recognize anybody and so I started asking folks where they were from. I liked the guys who flew to San Francisco from San Diego and rented a car and drove to Tahoe. They immediately left there and drove ten hours to Bend. They hit a good day.

After two sick runs on Northwest I had to get back to town. I'm glad the mountain sold a bunch of tickets. Maybe we can get our new chair next summer? Pretty please?

PS: Do they build new chair lifts anymore? Anywhere?

That report gave me a laugh. Invasion of the californian powder snatchers. Looks like great conditions.

Thanks in particular to the dearth of snowfall this winter in the Golden State, we've been "enjoying" that phenomenon here in Utah all of this season.

I'd guess a bit less impact over this way vs oohtah or Oregon, but still a surprising effect of Cali-tuckey skiers over this way this season so far as well... Seems to be heavily those on the Vail Epic passes from Tahoe, but I've seen a bit of SoCal influence as well. Although I also note that anecdotally the majority seem to be skiers and not the infamous Cali Borders.

If you run a ski resort in Colo and can't make money in a year like this....
