Today dawned clear and cold so it was time to go up and get in some turns! I knew the Cinder Cone would be tracked out at first light so I went to Plan B. I met up with Karen and Steven Ward, friends of mine from all our hut trips to BC. They had just been written up in the local paper for their impressive string of months on snow. Steve is at 17 years without missing a month of skiing and Karen is at 16 years!
This storm cycle was perfect as it fell mostly at 32 degrees at the resort level and then finished off cold. All the arctic air was trapped down in the lower areas and the warmer frontal bands were overriding the cold air. We got some freezing rain down in Bend but generally it's a winter wonderland in Central Oregon. The surface conditions were average Bachelor medium density freshies over a dense base. We are in really good shape for the opener!
