With the advent of the clear skies and the holiday crowds, Rob and I decided it was time to hit Tumalo. The snow quality is down somewhat after last week's warm temps, but it's still winter. There was a little storm mid-week that dropped a few inches, but I figured sun-softened turns on the southerly aspects on the way back would be best. However, we did find some winter snow on the shaded side of the mountain.
Tumalo Mtn is directly across from Mt Bachelor's Skyliner lift and tops out at 7757 feet. It's pretty mellow (but quite skiable) on the side that faces Bachelor, but there's a sweet cirque bowl that faces NNE off the top. It's no secret, and it's really easy access gives it a "sidecountry" status in my book. It takes about an hour to skin up from the Dutchman Flat parking lot.
