I dissuaded a questioner on another thread from hitting Mt. Baldy after last weekend's storm, questioning both whether there would be enough snow and how fast they would get things open.

Garry was up there yesterday, and I get a 50% score for predictions.

He was quite impressed with coverage. Baldy probably did actually get the 6-10 inches of cement mixed in with the rain Friday night. And Garry thinks the 3 feet of coverage for Thunder is accurate too.

The actual skiing was pretty tough. He said there was a breakable crust layer over the fresh snow that was a lot of work. Garry's a strong skier and he was on Volk Explosiv's (118 tip, 90 underfoot). The sun broke down the crust in the lower parts of Holcumac and Eric's. Skiers broke down the crust on Bentley's early on, and he said that it skied great the rest of the day.

I was right about the openings. The Friday night rain mix froze ice on the lift cables, so it took until 2:30PM to get Thunder running. Chair 4 never opened and chair 2 was also down with a mechanical problem.

If chairs 3 and 4 are running, I'd recommend Baldy for this weekend based upon Garry's report. Skiers should break up the crust on Thunder today. I will not make it because I'll be at Whistler with NASJA :D .

It's also quite clear from this report that Mt. Waterman should have adequate snow. If they don't open, it will be for management reasons.

No crust at Mountain High East. Tony, I think you woulda dug it. Olympic was even skiable for a little while. (It was open all day, just that the few good lines were hit quickly.)

Some people need to get out of the office and ski a whole lot more...

Here are some pics from real skiers and riders who spend REAL TIME on the snow Every Season ...

and to quote a Baldy local... chair 4 sucks!

Snowman,

Are you admonishing anyone in particular? My 3-year-old girl loved the cam, BTW. She asked to watch it again yesterday.

Great shots, Snowman! I especially like the last (of course) and the third from last (great line!).

I was there on the 7th. super fats would have been the call, but quite a few hidden treasures beneath the crust were ready to void warranties. how long can baldy go off after a storm like this? tony?

based upon Garry's comments, a snowboard probably was the call.

In that 3rd picture admin liked, it is a great line but notice the tree shadow. It's directly south facing, so if you want it in powder you need to get there within about an hour after the sun first hits it.

I expect this weekend to be decent skier pack. Unpacked snow will be very exhausting.
