Headed up to Mt High to start the season.
Was snowing in Wrightwood, about 29 degrees. Stayed below 30 degrees all day long.
Took laps at Mt High East. By 9 am 2-3 inches of socal snow had fallen on machine groomed hardpack. There were some deeper spots, but in general, about 3 inches had fallen on the runs. You know the drill : frequently hitting bottom but, its better than nothing on top of hardpack. Nearly everything was open except for Olympic Bowl. Very few people were up there. Visibility was good, wind approximately 15-30 mph gusts. Snow showers (no flakes).
At 11 am took the shuttle over to Mt High West. Lapped the quad , sticking to the left hand side of the mountain. Packed pow conditions -- approximately 4 inches had fallen by then and deeper in some spots. I was surprised at the good coverage and the lack of untracked (welcome to midweek skiing). Snow showers stopped @ 12 noon. Skies opened up and it was truly rippable snow (as far as SoCal goes).
Headed back up to Mt High East to finish up the day for more quad laps. By 230 pm there were very few stashes left , so decided to pack up and head home.
After skiing last season in Alaska one thing I can say I do not take for granted any more in SoCal: Visibility!!!!!!!!!!
Waiting for Baldy to pick up more base before heading up ......
