Took a
half bus load of HS'ers and while they were OK, the day was not real
enjoyable. Early start didn't pay. Black ice over Hogback jackknifed a
trailer truck delaying us over 45 minutes. Trail offerings were minimal.
Good for mid April, but this is early March. North Face bullet proof Ice
with heavy sugar on two trails (racing on another). Sunbrook one way down,
Carinthia one or maybe two ways down but all funnelled to one place. Main
face best options were untravelled areas on the sides of the two bowls and a
few of the hidden intermediate trails on the lower mountain, but those were
difficult to get to with big ice and heavy sugar in travelled areas. Lift
lines short, but with few trails and with even moderate traffic stuff became
treacherous. Had to pick lines through the crowds cause the trees were all
spent. Began to snow lightly around noon giving some hold to icy trail
edges where there was no grooming. Actually the best places were sides of
intermediate trails where there had been no grooming. But most of that was
a bit chattery. A freezing mist in the morning yielded to light snow at
noon, about an hour of light rain and sleet then the last hour, heavy snow.
Visability was fairly poor all day. And with heavy snow, the ride back over
Hogback was slooow.

The area picked up about 9" of snow so things are promising. Not sure about
change over to rain. Rain/snow line was below Greenfield, Mass. But
without substantial snow, Mt. Snow is cooked.
