My big West trip

I know it's early yet. I know I could get some well worthwhile corn, and if I'm really desperate for fresh I can alway shell out for cat skiing.

You forgot to mention that you just may get a three-foot dump, too.

That is true... we'll see. Either way I'm sure I'm going to have fun.

Save your cat ski $ unless it's short notice powder a couple of days after you've carved up LCC.

I would be spending more of the ski time in UT and less in CO considering the year the Front Range is having. It sounds from your schedule that you have to flexibility to consider that. And if you're bummed about no powder maybe put an extra day or 2 into the Southern Utah diversion.

And no matter what you see in the forecast - even 2 or 3 days out, it's often wrong for Colo.

The past month things have been a lot better over this way. The best of the best is still closed (east wall at the basin for example), but things are not poor over this way any more (all but one chute of Tucker is now open at Copper and all of Montezuma is open at the Basin for example). Especially if we keep getting the 2 days of a few inches and one day of bluebird pattern... At least the surfaces will stay excellent. Not exactly a powder dream, but solidly very good stuff.

rfarren, any changes to the colo portion? Still headed to the 'Boat, etc... (you'll want either a big dump or a warm day to keep things soft since it's low altitude and faces W and S). Just curious if you'd be over this way on the 27/28 weekend and if so where you're thinking for that weekend.

I'm pretty sure we're headed to either steamboat or aspen that weekend. My friend's condo is rented out for that weekend so we don't have access to a free place to stay near vail. So, instead we're leaving the front range. If you can get out a day earlier I'm sure we can get some good skiing together.

Because of the altitude/exposure issues Aspen is a far better choice than Steamboat in your time frame.

I'm well aware of that. The only issue is my friend. He has 3 $10 lift tix for steamboat.

Forecast is looking snowier for you.

Agree on the Aspen thing. Besides lower snow quailty, Steamboat is the Stratton of the west. And you already hit Stratton this year.

I think I70 is still closed in Glenwood Canyon. This means that you would have to take 40, and that a day at Steamboat may be unavoidable. Bring a book.

Is there a site that has the info about I70? That would put a really huge hole in my plans! My plans were to to drive on I70 from SLC to Beaver Creek on the 22nd. Do you think it should be cleared up by then?

Funny, I let my friend read this.

Accoring to this: http://www.cotrip.org/home.htm it is now open but only one lane, so to expect delays.

A question for the Utah people: How warm is it supposed to be the next couple of days? I know that there is an expected cold front on thursday (the day I arrive) which might bring some snow, although most likely not a lot. Should I expect it to be scratchy? I can bring an extra pair of skis for the firmer conditions.

As warm as it was today (into the 40s at 8000') or a couple of degrees warmer. That means west-facing is scratchy in the morning but delightful in the afternoon. There's no reason to ski firm snow -- follow the sun around.

I don't think on thursday or friday there is going to be that much sun to follow. Besides, it's suppose to cool down quite a bit according to the NWS forecast discussion.

Stop overthinking this. Bring whatever skis you can/want, show up, find good snow and have fun.

Dude, you live in the Northeast....nothing, but nothing, will resemble the "scratchy" you're used to. Even if it does, go find another aspect. Remember that as little as 5 degrees of azimuth can make all the difference in the world...something else you're not used to.

Only spring snow today was in Mineral and Yellow Trail (I am sure Challenger was baked though I didn't get to Supreme as usual). Castle and Sunday Cliffs and Little Cloud and Ballroom/Baldy Shoulder were all high quality if density inverted windblown powder that would have been impossible to enjoy without sufficiently fat skis. Tomorrow could be a different story/ valley temps in the low 60's.
