We're under a persistant ridge and the weather is gorgeous. My wife is in eastern Oregon circling the Wallowas with Cycle Oregon. I had to work and couldn't go, but today is Saturday! I chose to head up Tam McArthur Rim and climb Broken Hand and then circle around cross country to return to the trail. I brought my dogs, they're Beagles. I'm really getting into these fitness hikes and since the backcountry was late to melt off, now is the time to go!
This is a local backcountry skiing haunt. You snomo in and then skin up as you're right at the Wilderness boundary. Check out my 4/22/08 report. The volcanic peaks visible (from the left) are Middle Sister, North Sister, Belnap Crater, Mt Washington, Black Crater and Three Finger Jack.
Here is South Sister from the ENE. The snowfield on the left ridge is the Lewis Glacier. See my report from last weekend to get a better look.
Broken Top's north face with moraines, melt-water lake and lots of left over snow.
Broken Hand.
Looking back at Broken Top's glacial cirque with Mt B in the distance waiting patiently for this year's snows to start.
Below is the Bend Glacier with a pretty low firn line. I thought it'd be fun to document some of the local ice fields and monitor them over time. Let's see who wins this horse race.
The upper headwall of the Bend Glacier. Check out the layers.
My senior hiking partner Buddy.
My younger, but enthusiastic partner Pancho.
Heading back home cross country. I can't wait until next weekend.
