(non-skiing) Climbing South Sister

In my fourteen years living in Bend, I'm embarrassed to admit I'd never summited the South Sister. It's 10,353 feet, no giant by normal standards. But due to our northerly latitude and maritime climate, it's home to the Lewis, Clark, Prouty, Skinner, Eugene, Carver and Lost Creek Glaciers (for now). It took me three hours to ascend the roughly 5000 vertical feet in 7 miles, no shame there as I turned 56 today.

Here she is, from about the 6000 foot level. There is a trail to the top (visible) but it's long, steep, soft and gorgeously scenic.

The Lewis Glacier and it's terminal moraine and melt water lake.

The view down Lewis Glacier towards the Green Lakes Basin with Broken Top immediately above. That's Mt Bachelor with the Outback and NW Express runs visible to the right. The skier's right was free of sun cups and looked way turnable!

That's the Middle and North Sisters, Three Fingered Jack, Jefferson and Hood in the far right distance.

South Sister's summit cone is choked with an ice plug, hikers thrown in for scale. Prouty Glacier's bergshrund to the right.

Another view down the Lewis with the faint climbers trail that goes to Green Lakes. Broken Top again.

Oregon is tremenously beautiful and your photos reflect that. Great achievement with great rewards.

It would not surprise me if Sharon makes summer PNW trips a regular event, with the skiing and windsurfing along with hikes like this.
