Northern Rockies in Jan 2013?

Starting to plan my ski season...
The Wife and I just bought season passes for Homewood in Tahoe that come with 5 free days at Whitefish.

Trying to decide if Whitefish is a good gamble for MLK weekend this year. Last year was so good up in the Northern Rockies, and some of the long range forecasts indicate that 2013 may be a less than stellar year up there.

Just curious if anyone has any experience with the variability in snowfall at Whitefish between good years an lesser years. Does it typically vary a lot year to year? Are the bad years unskiable?

While I have free lift tickets, I would still rather not commit spend precious vacation time if the conditions are likely to be poor.

The other options that I'm considering is to visit Wolf Creek/Taos - probably cost us a little more, but it's in the area projected for a good winter.

Feedback, Opinions?

There is no real El Nino/La Nina trend for 2012-13. For MLK Whitefish is a far far better bet than Taos.

Thanks for the feedback Tony.

I'll keep looking into Whitefish. It looks like we can get a great deal on airfare and housing.

Do you think Wolf Creek is similar to Taos for January snowfall? If I make a trip down that way (I have a buddy in Sante Fe), would February be better than January?

I usually like to travel in January and February and stay local (Tahoe) March, because Tahoe seems to do so well in March.

Go to Tony's site best snow.net

But wolf creek, according to Tony's analysis is one of the more reliable snowfall locations vs. taos which is one of the least reliable.

We went ahead and booked a trip to Whitefish...
Hope the snowgods smile upon us...

Might try WolfCreek for a second trip, maybe February for President's day?

Still looking for the Climate Prediction Center's November update in the next week or so.

Wolf Creek is reliable but it's small. So if you're going to the trouble to visit the region, best to do it in February/March when the other places (Taos, Silverton, Telluride, Monarch, Crested Butte) you might consider on road trip will be better.
