Ogden area this thursday...

As I noted in a earlier post I'm headed into Utah this thursday. I am wondering whether to hit pow mow on thursday or snowbasin. I'm looking for untracked, but I've read a lot of reports that pow mow has a crazy access road. I wonder if its worse than the one at bolton. Does snowbasin get as tracked out or bake as much in the sun?

Yes, Pow Mow's access road makes Bolton's look like a flat Interstate, but it'll be no problem with this week's sunny and warm weather. That same weather will bake Snowbasin, but it's groomers will be skiing mighty fine.

Another storm on tap by the weekend should freshen things up nicely.

Will there be any untracked at snowbasin, or... by thursday will it even be worth it to look for untracked at either pow mow or snowbasin?

Anything left other than north-facing will likely be crunchy in the morning and cream-cheesy once the sun softens it.

The Powder Mountain access roads crawls up the south side of the mountain to its summit, so it burns off quickly. However, during a storm it's not pleasant.

PowMow is a little low to preserve powder really well (1000-2000 lower than the Cottonwood Canyons). And although it faces north - it is mostly north facing ridges with the majority of the skiing spilling off east and west. So these areas can get sun and sit low. Not the best combo for great snow preservation - especially with some warmer sunny weather. However, PowMow is one of the only sizeable mountains where decent areas of untracked remain for days.
