After almost 4 hour drive that included some traffic leaving San Jose and getting into and through Sacramento, I skied Palisades 1015-3.
I parked close to and rode Red Dog skiing Lakeview run then came up slow Resort chair and skied easiest route to Wa She Shu. There was a race course starting high on KT22 (just before the Nose) and they had controlled crossing of it. I skied to and rode Siberia, turning right at the top and skied the first groomed Gold Coast run I got to, followed by a steeper Gold Coast run. Next I rode slow Emigrant chair and skied the softening SE facing run then Emigrant Gully. I returned to Siberia and skied the main face twice. The top was very good, but groomers had left a lot of small frozen cookie on the bottom half of main face which led to and were a little rough with a lot of speed. Seconds lap I still got a lot of speed even though I was trying hard to control it. I next rode Big Blue and skied as far as I know the only gate open in rarely running (especially when I’m there) Silverado where entry was guard by “EXTREMELY DIFFICULT” sign.
Note tram at top of preceding and next photo, both taken while riding Silverado chair.
Landbridge skied like a smoothly groomed, somewhat firm, single diamond. After riding slow chair and see how confined skiing lines under would be I moved to Shirley Lake for two laps, then Granite Chief for two more, all excellent and not very crowded groomers. Looking up Granite Chief main groomer.
I skied Spring Bowl and Mountain Run, but found to get to my SUV where I’d left my sandwich would have required a long walk around bottom of race course or riding KT and skiing East Face or Tamara’s, which I did. The sunny part of the ridge past Olympic Lady chair was narrow with deep bumps so I dropped below big cornice into very firm, bumped NE face. Both the face and the N-facing East Face Gully were difficult with firm bumps.
I picked up my sandwich, repeated Red Dog to Lakeview run then ate my sandwich and chips riding Resort chair. I skied steeper main Red Dog run (Upper and Lower Dog Leg) which was groomed until you got around corner and faced a lot of big, firm, shady, steep bumps that I avoided as much as possible by skiing right edge that was a little smoother and getting some sun. Next time up I skied only Upper Dog Leg before taking easier groomer to KT where I skied the Saddle. I went up Headwall and skied Sun Bowl which had good snow, but main bowl had some bumps so I went further right where it was smoother near trees. I finished my day with another Tamara’s.
I wanted to get out Red Dog Ridge to W-facing Heidi’s but it was closed. I did get in below Heidi’s finding some good W-facing snow but trees where preventing it all from softening. I quit at 3 with 25.6K on my Avocet and SkiTracks had long (415 mi) drive across NV which got better after 9 pm dinner in Elko that woke me up.
