Palmyra Peak - Telluride, CO

I wish this was my post. But unfortunately, it is not.

I post because it is my belief that Telluride has the best terrain to be unlocked of any US ski area in the next 20 years.

Its high alpine. It's obvious to anyone who visits. And it should be developed with a Alps framework model in mind - surface lifts, small-owner/high quality huts, cheaply, aesthetics, environment. But this is something no US area could recreate - and I would gladly promote Telluride against a lot of places.

My problem: a SONY scion and a San Diego cancer center operator have owned Telluride over the past 10 years. Neither spends time in Telluride. Neither understands.

A step in the right direction...

Skiing Palmyra Peak

I cannot figure out a method to capture the photos, so I am just leaving a link.

Nice to see Telluride skiing moving in the right direction. The first thing Adam said when we were in Telluride in 2004 was, "Why are we skiing down here instead of up there?"

There are now rumors that Telski is going to 'soft' open the entire ridge of Gold Hill -- from Gold Hill chair summit to Palmyra Peak. Possibly in late February.

Further, it looks like the San Joaquin Bowl lift on the backside of Gold Hill looks like a go for next summer. The lift will extend even higher up Gold Hill providing access to a mostly upper intermediate bowl. Also, the 'soft opening' areas on Gold Hill ridge into Palmyra Basin will also be available. Good stuff.

This will really negatively effect Bear Creek BC area. Now, there will be no more hike - and everyone will have an unobstructed view of the terrain. The result will be a lot more traffic. (Unfortunately, given its narrow confines - the chance for a multi-fatality avalanche - is really increased.) Probably will become very similar to the popularity of Jackson's sidecountry. Days like this one will be more rare.
