Day 14: Another day of cruising with the Mrs.
The Kid is in town for a week and has been, to put it mildly, itching to ski. I had two Friends and Family tickets to Park City Mountain Resort and Mrs. Admin wanted to go, too, so we headed up to the Wasatch Back for a day of cruising.
Well, Mrs. Admin and I did, anyway. The Kid spent the day in the park, which frankly wouldn't have been my choice even if I was his age as the snow/rain level was barely below the base area and it was falling heavy and wet down low. The Mrs. and I therefore stayed high much of the day, braving increasing winds on the upper mountain to keep things dry and fluffy.
It snowed all day. Sometimes in big flakes, other times in a burst of graupel. It added up quickly leaving probably a half foot everywhere, and the wind frequently wiped away earlier tracks. Combine that with a complete lack of crowds and today offered some mighty fine storm day skiing.
We lunched at the Summit House, and we were joined by Eric Hoffman, PCMR's Interactive Marketing Manager. We've known each other electronically for some time but never met in person, so he grabbed his skis at lunch and headed up to meet us. Mrs. Admin stayed in the Summit House to warm up while Eric and I ran three quick laps -- first in the bumps on Single Jack (the first bumps I've skied all season as there just aren't enough people here yet to create them), last in Black Forest, but the run in the middle was the best. Pioneer remains closed due to maintenance issues, so we rode Thaynes and then sidestepped up to Hawk Eye, which with Pioneer down hadn't even been touched. Untracked top to bottom! \/
Then again, in retrospect Black Forest really hadn't been touched either. It was exceptional, too, but you just couldn't open it up and let her roll in the trees the way you could on Hawk Eye.
Mrs. Admin and I then cruised the rest of the afternoon on Silverlode and wrapped up at 4 p.m. with a couple of runs on PayDay and some coffee by the fire in Kristie's. All in all a terrific way to spend a Friday, and the forecast looks like we'll have powder days on tap for both Saturday and Sunday.
