Park City- The day we don't ski...

One more question for the experts.
I promised my 65-year-old Mother we would take one day off from skiing, and that could be HER day. Any ideas on something interesting to do that does not take place on skis or a snowboard? We are based at the Canyons, but have a car.

How big a day do you want? How much driving? What kind of activities - sightseeing, museums, hiking, gambling, etc.?

Wouldn't want to drive much farther than an hour. No gambling. The museum looks interesting. maybe a short hike, and a nice lunch afterwards? I think she did mention wanting to see the Mormon Tabernacle...but don't think it's a must.

The museum plus Temple Square plus maybe a stroll around Red Butte Garden plus a short drive over to the marina to see the lake up close and personal. Work in lunch either downtown or nearby (Red Iguana, The Copper Onion, Squatters Brewpub, Naked Fish, and Takashi are some options) or Ruth's Diner a little up Emigration Canyon.

There's also the Golden Spike National Monument on the north end of the lake where the first transcontinental railroad was completed, however that would be at least a 90 minute drive from PC.

The gambling option was really just tongue in cheek, but if you wanted to, Wendover, NV is 120 arrow-straight desolate interstate miles from SLC.

BTW, an hour is a little limiting - this is the big west after all - an hour's drive is nothing...but since you're from TX, I think you're kinda used to that!

Thanks marc, great info. Sorry i missed your joke. I thinking how tricky it is to find the liquor store in PC, and wondering where they hid the casino :)

One of the most interesting places to visit in SLC is the Kennecott Copper Mine. It's like a man-made Grand Canyon and there is interesting activity going on all the time -- dynamiting, biggest earth-moving machinery you'll ever see, in action -- unlike the Grand Canyon, which just... sits there.
There is also a well-designed museum and a movie explaining how the ore is mined, refined, etc. They get a lot of visitors and are prepared for them. Costs $5 per car. It's an only-here kind of experience.
Took my own 65 year old mother there and she very much enjoyed it.

Except that it's open to the public only during the summer. It should also be noted that the $5 fee that they collect is donated to charity.

It's the world's largest open pit mine and one of only two man-made objects visible from space with the naked eye (the other is China's Great Wall). It's quite the sight.

Pats BBQ is a must see for me on any trip to salt lake city. World class BBQ and a great atmosphere.

Sounds fascinating.

I kept waiting for something to happen at Zion and Bryce too. Fell asleep.

That's how we found it. I think you later posted a pick of your plate from there. Seriously though, skiing LCC after it snowed and eating Pats BBQ is probably as good of as possible on earth.

I've sent visitors to the mine in all seasons! Come to think of it, only the summer visits were completed :-s The latest pair, just days ago, went to BYU to ogle Mormons, instead. This is good to know.
I am going to put on my Marc_C hat here and say... the meme about the Great Wall being visible from space is wrong. It is long but very thin, more like an average road. Did I mention you were wrong?

:-D

Btw, is there anything notable at Temple Square for the average visitor? People keep wanting to see it and I discourage them based on my own meh experience but maybe I missed something.
