For those who have skied Park City Mountain Resort well know it is a big spread out area with around 3500 acreas when fully open. Those of us also know that most of the pitches only run about 1k-1200 vert (Crescent pod runs about 1700ft but gets the least snow) and the area is broken into different terrain pods. It is a has a very varied terrain between pods and also a very varied conditions. It has been expressed by experts on this board (Admin, Tony and Bobby D) that the upper mtn (jupiter pod, east face ,jupiter peak and Mckonkys pod and even pinecone ridge) which acct for about 1500 acres see significantly more snow then the rest of the mtn and the other Park city resorts in general (9990 at Canyons does well).
PCMR feels the need to report from there Jupiter Snow plot (10k ft and averages close to 400") to keep up with the big boys in Utah (cottonwoods and Snowbasin, pwdr mtn). This does not accuratly rep the rest of the mtn wear most tourists and lots of intermidate locals ski. The upper terrian is somewhat rugged and exposed and generally steep. Its funny how many from the other side (SLC and most of the country) joke about the resort when there is plenty at PCMR and the Canyons and Deer Valley that will make you feel like your skirt is too tight.
That said I wish that the resort would just report from the Summit house at 9200 where most of the skiing is located for the average joe. They report there early season until Jupiter fills in and then switch over. (BTW NWS reported 8" at Summit house by 6 am today). I heard alot of whining today on the mtn and on Wasatchsnowforecast about the snow cond and how PCMR was full of shit. I assure you that there reporting stick is accurate and in fact it showed a storm total of 12" by 10 am when snow showers let up.
As for the my report Skied 9k vert of pow by 1145 and headed back to work. Arrived at Jupiter lift at 925 and was about 12th chair. Got freshies on Potuguese gap, then 6 bells tried a run thru the war zone but it was windblown minus the bottom 300 feet. Headed over to Scotts that requires a 5 min hike, Scotts had the best snow maybe in the state this am(over knee) no signs of wind. The secret was out by the time I got back for another pass but was still barely tracked. Then did a lap on First bowl with its north exposure that got wind swept. This was a common sotry in the Wasatch today. Exposed areas got blown off, The good thing about First bowl is it has tree coverage in areas and the snow was really good after the first 1/3rd down. Another good 12" of blower. Did a final lap in the trees of Land of the Giants but just felt uneasy of the hard layer below in the tight steep trees and just backed off a bit. Skied down to Thanes lift and down thru Motherload meadows which had about 6" of denser wind blown pow that skied really nice. Up King Con and down Mens GS which had about 4" of wind blown over a hard base still fun but not counted as powder.
