The Catskills were the big winner in the recent multi-day storm that hit the northeast. Along with Hunter, Windham, and Belleayre, Plattekill bagged a legitimate 60+ inches of snow over the past three days and got a few inches more today. When lifties went to retrieve skis from people who forgot to keep their tips up (I did it twice  ), they'd sink almost up to their shoulders. Apparently, Plattekill was the only ski area in the Catskills that didn't suffer from power outages today. The huge amounts of snow toppled trees onto power lines and KO'd lift service, according to all reports.

Harvey, Jason, and I were happy that Platte has such a nice, consistent pitch, because the heavy snow would have stopped us in our tracks in a lot more places than it did. Harvey accurately defined it as "neither powder nor mank." Once, I was on a lift with some guy who said "I went to school in Seattle. Great terrain out there, but this is what the snow is like more often than not." It was a fun, but tiring day, and makes me realize that the powder we do get here is actually very acceptable. Our real issue, as has been discussed ad nauseum, is temperature fluctuations.

Here are a few pix of Harvey, who, everyone agreed, looked very accomplished in the bumps.

He has much better pix on his blog:

Like James said, It was a crazy day in the Cats. I'm sore from head to toe this morning.
While the kids and I were skiing The Chute. 2 teenagers were walking up shouting their friends name. They skied half way down and she wasn't there. They were quite concerned so I joined in on the search. After much shouting we heard a low voice in the woods. While walking the trails edge I came upon this.

Turns out she stopped to answer a TXT and slipped off the trail and tumbled into the woods. It took me a half hour to dig her out of chest deep snow.

That's a classic ,answering a text message while skiing and falling into the snow !! Having 2 teenage daughters know the story well , our own was answering text messages during a playoff soccer game , but at least she was on the bench.

Plattekill only has 1,100 verts, but in addition to the trails that are cut straight down (some people like 'em; I don't), there are several nice narrow trails that snake and roll interestingly through the woods (Twist, Ridge Run, The Chute).

Given the amount of skiable trees there, it was painful to see all that untracked snow laying there undisturbed -- heaven for snowboarders, but unless you had 140-waist skis or amazing fore/aft cement skillz, very tough going.
:x

Still, a lot of good skiing yesterday, especially the soft bumps.

Awesome report!

Jasons' story...priceless!

Did she hold onto her phone or sacrifice it to the snow gods?

Yesterday afteroon took a toll on our snow in CNY as well. XC skied in cement. MOre snow fell and it was like glue. Needed extra wax.

At Greek Peak the wet heavy snow was set up and there was 4" of fluff on top. It softened nicely as the day wore on. Conditions were excellent. Glad I got the fresh stuff before it got manked up.

another funny thing is , when i was digging her out, the phone was ring and she was mad she was missing her txt

Guys.... I'm pretty darn sore myself.

That was some of the most exhausting skiing I have ever done. James can attest that I was basically worthless after lunch.

Such a cool mountain, Maybe 200 parking spots total. Totally under the radar.

Nothing really notable except lots of snow and really good pitch. I'll take it. It's not a day I will forget.

The whole time I was skiing I had that voiceover from Admins video in my head.

One thing that was funny about the skis James (and at least a 100 others) lost in the snow off the lift. 15 minutes of shovel and the problem would have been solved. Instead the day had constant lift stoppages to deal with ejected skis. One couple lost everything is an unprecedented quadruple eject.

I haven't spent that much time with Jason, but in my limited experience with him, his heroics do not surprise me.

After seeing this pic Mrs Harv actually asked my why I can't DRESS more like Jason. He is a rockstar:

Taking the picture when the girl was drowning ... well ... maybe he's been spending too much time with James and me.

Good thing it wasn't me digging her out. If she had complained about missing a text message while I was doing the rescue, I would've gotten up and left her there.

Spent Sunday there and got to ski with most of the patrolers. moguls..moguls ..moguls...I had my new Rossi S3's and they just tore through anything. Amazing what new tech can do for you...especialy watching people yardsaling, double ejecting, flipping...this is hard stuff to deal with. I spent 2 days at Hunter up to my waist in some areas..on 174 volkl ac40's..which did suprising well. I only crashed a few times but it was murder. Skied open till close both days and I was toast. I'll post pics later, just got back from hunter...mogul fest with almost twice the vert...tired!!
I did post a bunch of pics on Alpinezone if interested, too tired for anymore.
