We wanted to go to Powder Mountain this week, so we decided to go on Saturday figuring it would be less crowded than the CC or PC resorts, and also to beat the warm temps forecasted to arrive on Sunday. I think we made a good decision. Despite being pulled over by one of Utah’s finest on the way up (no ticket, just a verbal warning), it only took about 1 hr. 20 min. We pulled into the main parking lot about 9:14 and there were only a couple of rows of cars in front of us (the lot never came close to being filled). Blue skies and temps probably in the low to mid-20’s. The groomers were pretty soft, even on the first run. Made our way over to Cobabe Canyon. Plenty of untracked snow, so I tried it out on a gentle slope…not sure what good skiers would call it, but it was too thick and heavy for me to handle well. More like talcum powder than fluffy powder. But I did see a group of good skiers seeming to have a good time with it, and some riders as well. After that I stuck almost entirely to groomers and a few short chopped up hills here and there.
Rode the Paradise lift up (that’s a long, slow ride) over some interesting steep terrain that had been tracked up, probably several days earlier…nobody was on there while we passed over. Snowchaser down to Hidden Lake Express, where we spent a lot of time on the black and blue groomers before breaking for lunch, then some more runs in that area. Late in the afternoon we headed back to the main lodge, but we had been having so much fun, we did a few more runs on the groomers served by Timberline.
I realize this is all rather ho-um to most of you reading this, but it was a fantastic day for us. Snow quality, for groomer purposes, was excellent. Hardly any lift lines, and often we could ski right up. Oddly enough, the longest wait we had was at the Sunrise puma lift to Cobabe. Beautiful resort, fantastic views. Can’t say enough good things about this resort. As we were leaving the parking lot, I noticed for the first time that our rental car had a thermometer. It was 31 degrees at about 4:30, and as we headed down the canyon it dropped to 30 degrees before it started to warm up…39 degrees by the time we got to Eden.
Had a conversation with some good SLC skiers who were there for the first time, never having visited before because it was “so far away.” Fortunately, they had a good sense of humor when I told them how ridiculous that sounds to us Mid-Atlantic skiers.
We were having such a good time I forgot to take any photos until after lunch, and then my camera started acting goofy.
