Powder Mtn Resort feature

I enjoyed that resort feature which posted today http://www.firsttracksonline.com/index. ... d=&topic=8, though I do remember quite well your post on that event last year. I hope to get back there this year...and I'm hoping that maybe someone will show us that outtabounds bowl you skied.

I really enjoyed the endless amount of untracked there...even on a saturday. Definitely a different kind of ski experience than Alta/Bird, and I liked it quite a bit...a nice diversion from the masses. You can't even get that much fresh at Snowbasin a day after a snow. And they say, at Powder Mtn, 5" skis like 10"...because of the generally low-angle and lack of rocks, you don't need a lot of deep snow to feel bottomless.

I'm so glad to see my boot fiasco featured again  .

It was the Saturday of President's weekend. My other day at PowMow was the Sunday of President's weekend in 1991. It was dumping all day and maybe every 5th chair was occupied.

Those of you who have been on my website would probably be surprised to see Powder Mountain's absence on http://bestsnow.net/utahnet.htm , as I make a strong effort to get snow data from places like this. Unfortunately they do not keep historical records.

But Powder Mountain has started to show in-season totals on its website. By comparing to the comparable numbers at Snowbasin it will be easier to make a good estimate. Both areas were very low last year, but applying last year's relationship to Snowbasin's long term average projects an average of 392 for Powder Mountain. A few years from now there should be enough data to be quite confident of the relative snowfall between Snowbasin and Powder Mountain.

But for now, it seems that my prior guess that Powder Mountain's snowfall is in line with Brighton/Solitude (400 average) looks pretty good. Whether this will convince admin to revise the marketing 500 number in his feature I don't know.

A 500 inch snowfall average in a non-marine climate is a rare, elite number. Alta is not overhyped, as we just saw from yesterday's report.

Powder Mt. is probably one of the few areas where you can honestly expect to find "untracked snow days after a storm".

I've skied there is both January and March. Due to its lower altitude, PowMow's snow quality really did not favorably compare to Alta/Bird or Sol/Brighton in March. It was not bad, but it was not Cottonwood fluff. In January, this was not an issue.

Powder Mountain is truly a step back in time. It has a very loyal local following and can hold freshies for many days if you know where to look. I love skiing there whenever possible but buy a seasons pass to Snowbasin for 2 main reasons. 1. My kids are on the Snowbasin Alpine Team and 2. The road to Powder eats cars both going up and down. :(
