Red Mountain Jan 21 2012 - surprisingly good

Drove up from Spokane last night....total $hit show... Landed in rain...Freezing Rain...always an exiting time especially with pylons who loose their $hit while driving in it. Anyway, made it out of metro area without major incident and headed north to the Border in a transitional weather event the went from freezing rain @ -2C to the same at -6C which then transitioned to Heavy Snow near Colville WA also @ -6C.

Red reported 15cm (on top of around 20 from the previous few days)...and that was true on some aspects but on others it was twice that. Overall I was very (VERY!) impressed with the coverage in all the areas. Red has not had a banner year but I believe that the reported snowfall total has been under reported. Mini Bowls, War Eagle, Buffalo Ridge to Captain Jacks Trees and the Slides, Beer Belly, and the Powder Fields where all excellent. Did a warm-up rockit-ship run on Long Squaw (not the current PC name) to warm up...absolutely wonderful. Chopped Pow with shorts shots of untracked bliss here and there made for a great 1st day of the season. Even a few face shots now and then. The nut has been cracked! Helmet cam suffered technical issues and visibility left something to be desired in the early am so I did not take video and only a few pics. BIG lineups (only at the beginning) as a day as good as this one augers well to attract most of the local community comprised of dirt bags and professionals in equal measure. Rossland is the funkiest town in Skidom followed closely by Nelson. For the Apres inclined, Great new Liquor Store in Warfield (on the way up to Rossland from Trail beside the FastGas), worth a visit if you are in the Rossland area. Met a guy on the lift who was giving out vouchers for $5 off any purchase, excellent selection and helpful staff...quite a refreshing change from the Trolls I have encountered at the other Kootenay area stores I've been to. I love it here...pictures at 11.

Nice to hear that as I will be skiing there next Friday/Saturday. YTD reported: Schweitzer 146, Red 101, Whitewater 192. Red should be less than Whitewater but not half and similar to Schweitzer based on long term data.

...after ripping hard and large on Saturday, spent Sunday teaching my local friend's staff member to board...it was fun as she was a very quick study and my legs really needed a break. Monday was mostly Bluebird with intermittent patches of low cloud. Absolutely NO ONE on the Hill. I was 2nd chair on SL and 5th on ML...barely seen a soul all day. This is why I love the Kootenays...great terrain and no people - perfect. The snow report indicated 5cm, a bit crusty on south and east aspects, nice on others. Hit my favs as well as others, Found pockets of untracked with a little work, still great lines to be had if you know where to look. Coolers and Papoose Bowl where both worth the effort. Another 20-30cm would Rock the $hite out of this place...

Well you should be marginally impressed...14cm reported on top of 5 from yesterday morning. Tony...maybe I will see you today. I will keep an eye out for you...I am tall s/b in electric blue pants. I expect most of the locals will only be there for a couple of hours and since its Wednesday, it will be like being at a private ski area back in Ontario...low density.

Had work to attend to yesterday so did not go up to the hill until 1:30pm. Noticed many coming off the mountain coated from top to bottom in Ice. Went up anyway...stupid. Instant goggle freeze up, visibility was terrible. Did one run down Southern Bell followed by one into Beer Belly down to Long Squaw. Goggles useless...ice crystals in the eyes...total $hite. Retired to Rafters for apres fun with locals. Left there @ 5:15 and it was dumping. Snow ended around 10pm. Saw buddy again in Rafters and got 2 x $5 vouchers. Ventured down to Warfield again to use up my bounty...

I am at Baldface through tomorrow. I will be at Red Friday/Saturday and at Whitewater Sunday/Monday.

Oops sorry Tony, it would appear that I lost track of time and space (it sometimes happens to me here) :-s
