Today was supposed to be our Revelstoke Mountain resort day. However, after 4-5 days of bouncing all over Canada and some great cat/heli-skiing, the crew was slow to rally. We wanted to cook a big breakfast, see the town during the daytime, and get some souvenirs. OK. The goal was to be on the mountain by 12 noon for half-price tickets. Revelstoke only picked up an inch or two from the Jan 23rd storm (cat/heli areas saw 4-6") and skiing was just ok.
Revelstoke continues to add art galleries and installations, more restaurants, and of course tons of ski shops. Construction is rampant. Some pics of the town:
MacKenzie Ave
Arts District?
More Downtown
We got to the mountain by 12noon and showed our vaccine cards so they would let us on the mountain. BC was still rather strict regarding Covid - Omnicron.
Our ski day was a little underwhelming. The gondola area was entirely in the inversion/fog/cloud layer. Luckily we broke through to sunshine for the Ripper and Stoke lift sectors. We started in the North Bowl/Ripper area and took a run or two.
Next, we moved to the sunnier west-facing Stoke chair.
Inversion cloud layer
Mt Carter
We stopped at the mid-mountain lodge for a beer in the sun before descending into the soup.
Despite just a few runs and maybe 2 hours of skiing, we achieved over 14k in vertical. This just speaks to how big Revelstoke is.
After skiing, we decided to try Monashee Spirits Distillery for apres-ski. They had a humorous cocktail menu, as well as glassware. https://www.monasheespirits.com/cocktails
After a massive beef dinner (this is for two), we went out since it was our last night in town.
Here is a shot introduced to us by our fellow Valhalla skiers who we met out in Nelson. It's called a Pickleback - a shot of Jameson Whisky followed immediately by a shot of pickle juice. Amazingly it works! Cuts the whisky after-burn.
Revelstoke is one of the best ski towns in North America currently. I am not sure it's affordable anymore, but it's not crazy. But you have the largest vertical resort in North America, lots of day heli and cat operations, massive ski touring (Roger's Pass is just out of town), and many remote heli and cat lodges nearby. Smack in between in Monashees and Selkirks, it's a special spot. Makes me want to make an Airbnb investment.
Our Airbnb serves as motivation:
Hardcore group - 12 midnight.
