Here's a couple of pics from B.C. coast mountain, backcountry of Shames mountain in Terrace. Perfect snow, weather and buddys.

My understanding is that those places far north have escaped the drought gripping most of B.C. in the past month.

How long is the hike beyond Shames' lifts to get at that stuff?

It's been rainig with a lot 2 weeks prior to my arrival and a full week of 12" a day snowfall. Prior to the rain, there was the usual snow they get (sh*tload; 480"/year) but poor stability aka No backcountry skiing. The first weekend I arrived, every local powder hounds were out in the front and backcountry.

Depending on wich bowl you decide to hike and ski, cause there is 9 bowl skiable on a day trip from the ski area, it can be a 30 minute hike/ski to the station or if you aim for Superbowl, you'll be out for a complete day.

Patrick is sitting here with me in our Jay Peak condo and we just looked at the photos together.

I guess Jay Peak isn't as exciting after that trip, even if we are having some great snow up here.

Or maybe we'll see you tomorrow?

but yeah, the scenery just isn't as dramatic as BC.

Can I just ask the logistics of getting to Shames?

It sounds like you could go anywhere - if you make the effort to ski Shames. Never was on my radar even when living in the NW. However, the pics obviosuly speak volumes.

Direct flights from Vancouver to Terrace twice a day. You can also flight to Prince Rupert and then drive the beautiful 160km(?) drive along Skeena Valley.

The ski area is something like 20 minutes up a road from town. We did a long discussion on Shames maybe 2 years ago here. Ski area is fun, but it's the easy backcountry access that makes it worth it. Oh yeah, they also receive annually (on average) 14 meters of snow. :mrgreen:

From all I read the main attraction is backcountry on AT or teles. Lift service is relatively small, Whitewater is likely the most similar area I've skied. There are some heli operators up there, Northern Escape and Last Frontier, so perhaps worth a combined trip sometime.
