This is where my son is supposed to be going tomorrow. There is not yet enough details to tell if this is in-bounds.

(CNN) -- A skier buried by an avalanche was found dead Christmas morning at a California ski resort, authorities said.

The 21-year-old victim was identified as Randall C. Davis of Tahoe City, California, according to a local coroner's news statement.

The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. after Davis and a friend rode a ski lift at the Squaw Valley Ski Resort, the statement said.

Davis' friend became concerned when the two got separated and alerted authorities that Davis was missing.

They found Davis' body under several feet of snow, the statement said.

Not 100% sure but I have a friend there who said he saw patrol digging in a bunch of debris around the time of the avalanche and he said it was in bounds. I picked up a BCA beacon after the snowbird incident, this makes that $300 feel even more worthwhile.

Tahoe Daily Tribune says it was in the Red Dog area. I remember skiing across there once in the 70s and seeing a 3 foot fracture line above me that made me want to get out of there fast.

A 21-year-old man was discovered dead at Squaw Valley Ski Resort Christmas day.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Randall C. Davis, a Tahoe City resident, was reported missing in the Red Dog area — a heavily wooded area that’s very steep and considered expert terrain, according to Placer County Sheriff’s office. Ski patrol responded and found a fresh avalanche path in the immediate vicinity. A single ski was located that matched Davis’ skis.

A search with trained dogs and electronic tracking devices located Davis several feet under the snow. He was dead when discovered.

A further search revealed no additional victims.

Davis remains were taken to the Placer County Morgue where an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Davis' friends and family described him as an expert skier who frequented the ski resort since he was a kid.

SF Chronicle also has a little more info:
(12-25) 19:32 PST SQUAW VALLEY -- A man considered an expert skier died in an avalanche in rough terrain at Squaw Valley ski resort on Christmas Day, authorities said.

The Placer County Sheriff's Department identified the victim Thursday evening as Randall C. Davis, 21, of Tahoe City.

The Sheriff's Department said the incident happened about 11 a.m. in the Red Dog area of the resort while Davis was skiing with a friend. The companion told authorities that he and Davis had taken a lift up the mountain and were skiing through fresh snow in difficult terrain when they became separated. The friend said he looked for Davis for a bit and then contacted the ski patrol to conduct a thorough search.

Rescue personnel found what they called a "fresh avalanche path" where Davis was last seen, and a single ski was found sticking out of the snow.

Rescue personnel brought in search dogs and electronic tracking devices, which helped locate Davis buried under several feet of snow. He was dead.

Family and friends told authorities that Davis was an experienced skier who had been going to Squaw Valley since he was a child.

The area where the incident occurred - extremely rugged, heavily wooded and steep - was hit by heavy winds and snow, creating blizzard conditions.

Davis' body was taken to the Placer County morgue in Auburn, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the second fatal incident at Squaw Valley this month. On Dec. 16, three female employees of the resort were found dead in their car. Placer County sheriff's officials believe the deaths were due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Authorities speculated that snow from the night before had blocked the vehicle's tailpipe, causing exhaust fumes to get blocked and seep through the floorboards.
