Among the many similarities:
-Lotsa cheap skiing seekers warming up in the lodge most of the day
-Temps about -10 up the hill, just below zero at the base, all day
-Limited terrain
-A skiing companion with seriously ominous patches of white on their face after two runs (last week was Kathleen, this week ski/school buddy Pete)(In both cases it was caught quite early.)
-Winds high enough for windhold, except today they never closed the M1 lift, though they prob. should have
-Loose snow laying around for the taking, just not tons of it

My first time ever at Smuggs was a smidgeon of what the mtn. has to offer I know, but what I skied I liked. We only skied off the Sterling, M1, and M2 lifts, and terrain highlights were only the powder waiting on the lee side of slopes and the many rolls, little snowmaking dropoffs and "hits" peppered about. Only glade attempted was Highlander which looked promising but proved to be a bit skied out. The top of M1 was an exercise in masochism with any exposure
at all equalling all the snow blown into the trees and off the piste. If only I knew where to find those stashes...

Still, 10-12 runs in sub-zero,windy VT weather, a little "kickin' it new school" with the seriously underdressed youngsters in the terrain park, and some genuine boot top powder in places added up to a succesful venture.
The place needs some more natural, to be sure, but just about all the main avenues have more than adequate cover.

Jim B.
