Smuggler's Notch, VT 4/16/01

Had to drive bro-in-law Johnny to Dorval in the late afternoon so we opted for a northerly destination, and he got to ski Smuggs for the first time. A late start meant skiing at 11:15, at which point the Back Bowls had not yet softened up. Hershey Highway was improving rapidly though, and on the next ride up we spied Matt D. and Whitney and met up moments later. Some teary eyed, high speed, trench-digging, carve-fest runs and another Hershey Higway (this time much softer), we bid adieu to Whitney and found a interestingly narrow and steep snowboarder chute in the Back Bowls for a last run. An excellent three hour day.

M1 at Smuggs is shut down until the weekend. Matt claims they'll run it both Saturday and Sunday, which is Smuggs last two days of operation. There is still a ton of snow up there, just like MRG, probably more. The woods will be good for some time after the lifts close. Oh well. Hopefully MRG will stay open until June.
