We were going to make it a short day and bail when the crowds showed up. The
crowds never arrived and the skiing was great.

All but a few trails on Madonna and Sterling are open, though some of the
natural blue trails had some thin cover. Other trails had thin spots here
and there, but nothing that couldn't easily be avoided. The last weeks
warmnth seemed to create a nice based and with a few inches of new snow
since then, most surfaces were nice packed powder. Although we are not woods
travelers just yet, tracks were seen going into the usual locations.

We jumped back and forth between Madonna 1 and Starling all day, seemed to
be the first day of the year were it was tough to decide what run to take
next. Smugglers Alley had been groomed earlier in the week and had nice soft
bumps. FIS showed signs of recent snowmaking but also had nice bumps,
although I'd assume they will groom it shortly as all the snowmaking whales
are still here and there. So other runs of note included Shuttle, nicely
covered and usually forgotten about, lower waterfall, short but only had 5
or so tracks, and black bear, a great natural snow trail hidden in the
middle of sterling.

All in all a great day....

Oh.... and a snow report. Last night they only got a dusting. Today it was
snowing real light all day with it heavier for about an hour or so, picking
up an inch or less. Couldn't have said it better then Jason just did....

>>>
But it doesn't matter, because today was still awesome. Ignore the
weather forecasts, they're usually wrong. Ignore the snow reports,
they're usually marketing. Go ride (or ski)!
<<<

------------------------------------------
Tim Watson

Time for smuggs to get some new warning signs, I'm sick of seeing "Spring
conditions exist" in the middle of January.....
