Hopefully this isn't sacrilege, but I decided to do some skating style cross-country skiing today at Snow Basin. I went to church with my friend and his family in the morning (we passed a few LDS churches on the way to a nice Christian church in Eden). I rented cross country skating equipment for only $16 at Snow Basin. (I believe full day rental is only $17.). I drove the short distance to the Outback trail start, and started skiing at about 2 PM.. The trail wasn't marked, but I confirmed that it was the right one with a skier I met there. The trail has a total of 600' elevation gain, and goes up and down the full 1.8 mile distance. I wouldn't recommend it to beginners, but it was fun, though quite a bit of work (part of the package with cross-country skiing). I did the 3.6 total length (including return trip), then decided to do it again. However, I crashed on one of the first downhill turns, and broke one of the carbon fiber rental poles. I decided to press on with one pole, and finished the trail a second time. The trail is a lot of fun, as long as you have some experience on the skinny skis. I find skate skiing to be a nice complement to my downhill skiing, esp. for a short day.
Kudos to Snow Basin: the rental people didn't give me a hard time about the broken pole, and didn't charge me any extra.
