I went to Snow Basin with a former coworker, Sam, who had moved to North Ogden with his family about 2 years ago. Sam started the day on tele skis, which aggravated a back that has given him trouble in the past. After a couple of runs, Sam went to take a break, then switch to regular alpine skis. I skied the rest of the morning with 3 engineers from Hill AFB that Sam had introduced me to. The base had given everyone the day off, and a lot of them went to Snow Basin (it's an annual tradition). I had trouble keeping up with the 2 boarders in the group, although they did lead me to some decent runs in the Strawberry Peak area. There was maybe 8 inches of fresh snow at SB today. It wasn't that dry by SLC standards, but it was good in my book, esp. near the top. You could feel (and hear) the old frozen surfaces in spots, while some North facing areas had never frozen and skied exceptionally well.
In the afternoon Sam and I went on the Jean Paul lift. There were areas of nice snow there, esp. in the trees. Later in the afternoon we skied with a couple of ski patrol friends of Sam's. They took us up the Mt. Allen Tram, then we traversed up to No Name peak. It had cleared up nicely by then, and the views were gorgeous. The snow was great, too; nice powder, largely untracked (some lightly tracked, for the purists). Later we skied Easter Bowl, which was Sam's and my favorite run of the day. Well worth the stormier weather earlier, and the crusty undersurface in some of the areas. Overall, a very good day, though Snow Basin did wear me out.
For Tony's benefit, I logged about 19,700 ft of vertical, mostly powder. (Now that I'm in SLC, I see that Mt. Baldy is getting dumped on. Interesting timing)
