Snow in SLC

I awoke this morning to about 3" of snow at the house at 5,000 feet. There was barely a dusting on the valley floor at 4,100 (and gone by the time I drove through), but 10-14" fell in the mountains. It sure was sweet this morning having to clean off the truck, but even sweeter to look up at 11,000-something-foot Twin Peaks to see the wisps of snow blowing off the ridgeline in the northwesterly winds behind the cold front, completely backlit by the rising sun. (too distant to effectively photograph with a PhD camera)

That storm has hit Colorado with some vengence. Loveland is reporting 22" and it's still snowing. I couldn't make it into work today in Denver. The roads were a parking lot. Oh well, I can work from home.
Fraser has received 16" and Breck around 15". These are alll reports from this morning. I am sure they have gotten more. Starting to look like another great early season for Colorado. \:D/

I snapped a couple of long-distance photos of the mountains while at lunch.

It's such a pretty afternoon that I couldn't resist shooting a few more from behind the wheel during my evening commute, even though the snow has disappeared from my neighborhood already as well as from the south-facing aspects of the foothills.

 That pic was taken at 75 mph on I-80 at 4:45 pm!

Honestly, my commute takes me from one end of the Valley to the other (east to west, and back), and it never varies by more than about 60 seconds in length from one day to the next - 17 minutes, door to door. Compared to cities on either coast, our traffic is nothing. The I-15 that tirolerpeter referenced is our busiest road (runs north to south through the Valley), but even that isn't too big a deal, relatively speaking.

Yet they're planning for more. TRAX, our light rail system that debuted in the late 1990s in time for the 2002 Olympics, just saw its 50 millionth rider this week -- way, way above ridership projections. They're in the process of expanding that north into Davis County, and they're currently planning to build several east-west spurs of the light rail literally a decade ahead of schedule.

As I've said around here far too often, living here doesn't suck.

You wanna see off-peak around here? Hop on any Interstate on a Sunday morning when by definition 50% of the population is otherwise occupied.

I-80 in SLC was severed and numerous freeway ramps were closed in March of both 2000 and 2001 while I-15 was being widened for the Olympics.

There would be blood on the streets in L.A. if a freeway was ever down that long for repairs. A 2 mile stretch of I-10 was damaged by the Northridge earthquake. The construction company that was hired to repair it worked 24/7 and was given a $20 million incentive to finish in a very short time frame, possibly as short as one month.
