Snow time

Snow is in the forecast for the wasatch come tuesday night. Wax them boards! Convenient that Wed is the last day of the month.

All models are cold enough for snow into the northern mountain valleys and possibly down to the northern valley floors although dont expect much if any accumulation there. There is also a potential for lake effect Wednesday night into Thursday in the ec and Gem solutions and that could be significant given that the lake will be very warm. Significant accumulation is likely in the northern mountains from this storm. All models indicate another trough could drop into the western states the following weekend so temperatures will likely not return to current values again this season.

return to current values again this season.
SoCal current values since Tuesday through at least tomorrow 100F+.

From a skier's perspective Labor Day is the dead of summer here. It's roughly equidistant between my median closing (May 27) and opening (Dec. 16) ski dates and also between the best case examples of early July and early November. The weather around here usually fits that impression well.

It's downright oppressive here in Studio City. Calgon - take me away!

folks are already getting retardo amped about snow that our higher places will/may see between now and wednesday. east coast september turns will be had by the hardy if it happens. me? my skis haven't been put away long enough to get too excited about snow just yet. we're still a long way from WROD warm up conditions. gonna get warm next week and i'm very much looking forward to it. gonna be damn cold tonight.

I know the feeling, 3 weekends ago was snowed in a Santa Rosa storm. Some people on ZS are excited about the testing of the guns at Loveland or any other behaviour of silliness...can't wait for skiing at any cost. People pay big $$$ to ski a patch while they don't show up when ii's real good in April. There are some advantages to skiing every months...you never feel any withdraw for snow and turns. :-D

Special Weather Statement

Statement as of 2:46 PM MDT on September 26, 2009

... Cold Pacific storm system to impact the area midweek...

The first significant storm system of the fall is expected to
arrive across Utah late Tuesday through Wednesday... bringing the
potential for widespread valley rain and mountain snowfall to
much of northern and central Utah.

Strong south winds will precede this system Tuesday across much
of the region... before the cold front reaches northern Utah late
Tuesday night... then surges through the remainder of the state on
Wednesday. Much colder air will follow this front... and after a
long stretch of high temperatures in the 80s... temperatures will
cool 25 to 30 degrees... and struggle to reach the lower 50s
across the northern and central valleys Wednesday.

Snow levels are expected to fall to near 6000 feet across northern
Utah Wednesday... and into the 7000 to 8000 foot range across
central and southern portions of the state. Significant snow
accumulations will be possible across the higher terrain of
northern and central Utah Wednesday through Wednesday night before
this system moves east of the area Thursday.

Those planning outdoor activities Wednesday and Wednesday night
across the higher terrain of northern and central Utah should be
prepared for winter-like conditions. Be sure to monitor NOAA
Weather Radio and local media outlets for updated information and
forecasts on this pending storm system.

Streakers who need September will have more of a challenge than those who wait until
this system moves east of the area Thursday.

Sloppy seconds have nothing to do with it. Sloppy has everything to do with it.

Or you could just go both days. Frozen water is better than it's liquid sibling.

having been a surfer longer than anything else that i do, but have skied some good frozen water in my time, i'd say that an epic snow day pales in comparison to an epic surf day. moving water is just so much more dynamic than it's frozen sibling that just sits there.

Them be fighting words, at least on this forum. Certainly explains why you had to leave Utah. I love the ocean too, but an epic powder day...well,... I guess it's different strokes for different folks...

Speaking of surf, the great lakes region is being blasted with some strong 40mph + gale force winds and those winds have the lakes all worked up.
A few snip-its I have found around the web, Surf is up for sure here.

The great lake Superior
FOR THE MARQUETTE AND ALGER COUNTY SHORELINES...

NORTH WINDS OF 35 TO 45 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 60 MPH CAN BE EXPECTED MONDAY INTO MONDAY EVENING ALONG THE LAKE SUPERIOR SHORELINE. WITH WINDS THAT STRONG...WAVES UP TO 25 TO 30 FEET ARE POSSIBLE ALONG THE MARQUETTE AND ALGER COUNTY BEACHES MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT.

Grand Haven Area, Lake Michigan
At 6:50am on Monday September 28, the south buoy in the center of Lake Michigan has west winds of 29-35 knots, and waves of 9.5 feet. With the longer fetch over to the shores of Grand Haven, the waves would grow to 13-15 feet!

Lake Erie "western basin"
The winds are blowing so strong from the west, there is a Low Water Advisory on the west side of the Lake. Blowing all the water to Buffalo, NY LOL
Max waves on this side of the lake, only 8 feet lol

Many Ocean Surfers don't know UNSALTED WATER is HEAVIER...Lack of SALT in WATER = Less Oxygen...& they wonder why they FLOAT BETTER & their Boards in the Ocean.

Anyone ever surf the great salt lake? Ever get good enough waves on there? With all that buoyancy in the great salt lake, I bet you could stand up and just ride the waves in on your feet! LOL/JK

Oh, and I would take a day of Powder over a day of surf for sure.

I don't live in slc, so I don't know for sure, but if you could I don't think you would want to surf the great salt lake. It looks sorta gross, and if you had the slightest of cuts you would be in agony for sure.

For those who live there, does it have a polution proble, being located in a basin right next to SLC?

I knew that you were more bouyant in Salt Water. That's why people float on the dead sea.

Some chemical pollution from industry, but not worse than the beaches of NJ or So Cal. Urban runoff of storm water is a bigger problem. Heavy metals, particularly mercury, are a different story.

However, pretty much no one other than tourists actually swims in the lake, and even that swimming is usually nothing more than a quick float to experience the buoyancy (its salinity is higher than ocean water) and to say they did it. Besides salty as hell, it's fairly alkaline, so it feels slimy. Since the water level has a huge fluctuation, some section of the slimy mud/salt flats is often exposed. They would of course contain dead insects, plant matter, and the occasional dead water fowl and excrement from said fowl. Many times the lake has a very distinct aroma at the shore (once you're out on it, there's no smell).

So basically, boating is the majority of recreation on the GSL. Things like water skiing, wind surfing, etc are mostly done on Utah Lake in Utah County, 35 miles south of SLC, as it's a fresh water lake.

While I won't get into the subjective preference, I would agree with icelantic that if you are an avid surfer and skier, it's more crucial to live near the surf. Unless you're a total powder snob the snow builds through the season and can be counted upon in many places for quite a while once it's there. With surf, you have a clean slate every day, so if it's good you have to hit it now.
