This was a short day because Adam was not feeling well and Molly's knee was tender from the workout of the past 3 days. She blew out her right ACL over Christmas and will have reconstruction surgery over spring break, but meanwhile is skiing with a brace. They had a 12 hour drive back to San Diego, with Molly back in class at UCSD Tuesday.

Snowbasin was busier than on my previous visits. Both Needles and Strawberry gondolas were running 5-7 minute lines. But both go for 2,400 vertical, so you still get lots of skiing and the slopes are not congested.

admin predicted spring conditions, but they were only present on ungroomed areas with south exposures . The extensive groomers on Strawberry were in good shape and the other 2 terrain pods were nearly all packed powder.

After a couple of runs on Strawberry, I returned to the main area via DeMoisy Chute. 2 runs on John Paul were on the Wildflower Downhill, which has been groomed into a wide bowl in the steepest sections with this year's extensive snow cover. The first time I diverted into the lower section of Grizzly Downhill, which had chalky moguls than did not agree with Molly's knee.

Therefore we took a pass on further ungoomed runs near the John Paul lift, nearly all of which were packed down with at least some mogul sections similar to Grizzly Downhill. We did ski Mt. Ogden Bowl, which had seen less skier traffic.

Overall Snowbasin is in great shape, and its long fall line cruisers are reminiscent of its sister area Sun Valley.

I think it has become busier. Although you did go on a holiday when many destination skiers/Northeast schools have the week off.

Crowds really congregate on the 2 gondolas. The John Paul lift has very few groomed paths off of it. And the other lifts are slow and uninviting to use.

Some stats I had. You can notice the Olympic expansion increase in 00/01. And another bump when the masses finally caught on in 04/05.

Snow Basin - last 10 years. Visitors in 1000s. % of total Utah visits.
96 64.0 2.2%
97 85.0 2.8%
98 94.0 3.0%
99 86.7 2.8%
00 79.6 2.7%
01 155.2 4.6%
02 120.5 4.1%
03 127.2 4.0%
04 177.6 5.2%
05 220.0 5.6%
06 240.0 5.9%

Remember that 04/05 was a huge snow year. That was the season when Snowbird went to July 4th - something like 750" in LCC. All the Utah resorts saw a significant bump that year.

Is Snowbasin still considered a money pit for Earl? Not that it's going to put a dent in his fortune...
