Snowbird 2/4/07

Snowbird is one of my favorites here in Utah and it lived up to its expectations.

What made it special today was skiing with Admin, Marc_C, Matt Kulas, Pam, Amy and John (our token rippin telemarker).

Sure we negotiated rocks in tight places and Pam even got hooked on a tree and needed to be lifted off of it by a stranger while we waited at the bottom wondering what had happened to her, but where there was snow it was very nice. Steep bump and tree runs with soft snow and soft bumps. It is a low snow season, so the obstacles added to the excitement and challenge of each run. The consistently cold temperatures have preserved snow quality in addition to the new recent snow.

The wx was for sunny skies, but Snowbird got socked in with fog and snow most of the day though it did clear as we were ending our day when the lifts closed.

The best skiing was in the Gad area in the trees. We went for a ride up the new Peruvian high speed quad to check out the tunnel to Mineral Basin. We skied braille in MB. Matt and Admin went over to Alta at that point and the rest of us decided to get out of the fog.

The Peruvian area was socked in, but we felt our way down on narrow cat tracks (with switchbacks that were barely identifiable) until we got out of the fog. It would have been crazy to attempt bumps where we couldn't see anything but white. Once we got low enough we dropped into the trees and found some nice soft bumps.

After lunch at the Rendevous Cafeteria in the tram base, we headed back over to Gad to enjoy the runs in the trees with the best visibility and nice soft snow.

The snow skied well today. There was some minor accumulation that really kept surfaces soft even with all the traffic that Snowbird manages.

After Powder Mtn, it was weird being on the trails with so many people. We stuck to the woods for the most part and didn't have to share too much until we got down to the cat tracks. The most dangerous part of some of our runs was crossing a cat track to get to the next tree shot.

Marc_C and John joined us girls for Apres ski at our digs in Cottonwood Hts, just 15 minutes from Snowbird. It is great to have friends in such places. There's a room for rent here by the day or week with bathroom and kitchen privileges for a single or couple. Send me a personal message if you'd like more info on that.

There are Utah locals here at Chatter Creek, and they think Snowbird is quite rocky now. My rule of thumb is that it's good when the base is over 70 inches, and that Snowbird should be avoided if the base is under 50 inches.

Snowbird skied just fine w the snow there. Sure there r rocks but they can be avoided. Marc_C helped by skiing over them first so I`d know where they were. Brand new skis remain unscathed.

It was much better than anything back east.

I would not avoid The Bird just because there`s less than 50" of snow. Just ski where there's snow and go around any non-snow obstacles.

I found that I enjoyed the challenge of picking a clean line through each run.

the things lack of snow will make us do and think...

Regardless, glad you had fun, as it's good to make the most of of what you have. That's what I tried to do this past week in Utah.

I was going to hit Snowbird yesterday, but decided to drive back home to LA.. after looking at the cams and seeing nothing. Although, there were other reasons for leaving my trip to go home early, poor conditions was among the top of the list. That was the nice part of driving there is having the flexibility to leave whenever I wanted and save some money for next time.

If there was less than a 50 inch base at Snowbird I would not necessarily go home and not ski. But in deference to my equipment I would probably ski at Alta or Brighton instead.

Easterners have different standards.

Any skiing is better than no skiiing. I'm just happy to be out there.

going back to snowbird tomorrow.
