We're now back to the sun mode that I often see on the Iron Blosam weeks. But temps aren't quite as warm, topping out at 35 or so. So over half the mountain is still winter snow after 2 sunny days.
My legs are definitely lacking stamina, so I'm content to ski with fairly large groups with more rest stops. Nonetheless a few interesting runs. On 3/12 Diana wanted to step it up some, so Amy and I guided her in the Upper Cirque, Shot 10 I think. Later some us took a smooth line down the more constricted skier's left of Upper Silver Fox. And there were a few nice tree runs off Gad 2, with the rest being cruisers. I quit at 3:20 again with about 18K.
Today most of us headed up the tram for a Chip's warmup, then up Peruvian into Mineral Basin about 11AM. Groomers and open terrain were suitably soft by then. Off the groomers its best to stay in skier packed lines back there, as the loose stuff is not consolidated and will toss you around. At noon I stopped to watch the comp on Upper Silver Fox for while, met Al there, took a run on Peruvian where we saw an injured competitor being evacuated by heli, then to the plaza for lunch. The big group went up the tram, down Regulator to Gad 2. Ed led most on to Tigertail, but Al and I were content to poke around shorter Gad 2 shots like the STH trees. Up Gadzoom and a cruise back to the Iron Blosam by 3:40 for 21K.
Al has been demoing skis since one of his cracked at the tail, and I think is buying Rossi B3 demos at a bargain price of $239. He's letting me have the old 1999 vintage Atomics. If I can get that tail glued, I could use those skis for Baldy and June/July Mammoth duty since my similar age Volants were declared toast after the 2+ foot delamination at the end of last season.
