I never thought 5" could make me so happy, but it really did. (TWSS). Friday was really really awesome. I'd have to say it was probably one of the least crowded powder days I've seen all season.
The bus ride up was its normal crowded packed to the gills experience. Got off at Snowbird Entrance 1 and took Gadzoom over to Gad 2. Proceeded to do about 7 laps under the lift. It's one of my favorite lines in Snowbird. The snow was a fairly light 6" on top of a mildly firm subsurface. Some moguls definitely still showed through. I think this is why I love this line -- it rarely gets big moguls, so when we get the 6" on top of a firm subsurface, places where large moguls form is where I look to go.
I took a few runs on Upper Tiger Tail. It skiied REALLY well. Seemed like there was a fair amount of traffic over there. Creamy lines and lots of untracked. It's one of my favorite areas in Snowbird.
I heard the explosions stop coming from Road to Provo and I knew it was time to move over to Little Cloud. Sure enough, as I was coming off of Gad 2, I saw the mad rush on the traverse....time to feed!!
Ran into Bob D and Colin on the lift and we took a few bitchin runs together. It's always a feeding frenzy when the rope drops, so care has to be taken to avoid powderhounds foaming at the mouth looking for big untracked lines (kinda describes me).
The line was getting long (5 minutes is long when you ski midweek) so I decided to move on. Funny thing I honestly have never experienced in 30 years of skiing....I saw a guy walking down with a completely busted ski. And it wasnt a cheap ski , either. The ski was shredded. Comments such as "my dad is a repairman, he can fix that" to "I hope you got the extra insurance on that!" was proof that there is no mercy or compassion amongst skiers up at the Bird. Saw AmyZ and TeleJon in line going up for laps.
I went back over to Gad 2 and took the long traverse over to ski some more lines on Upper Tiger Tail. I have never skied this area before and was really impressed with the wideness and vertical of the terrain. There really is something special about skiing an area you have never skied before. I know we get in our routines of our normal favorite lines, but seeing new terrain and having to negotiate new obstacles is a fun part of skiing. Of course, care has to be taken ....the snow was getting a little heavier down low and a little bogged down, but nevertheless, lots of untracked. Fairly tight trees in some areas....
Took Gadzoom up....there are some awesome looking chutes as one goes up Gadzoom. As a newbie to LCC, I haven't the knowledge or the will to find out how to access those chutes. From the lift, it appears the hefty price to pay for skiing aforementioned chutes is a edge job on the entry. I went looking to find out how to access one beautiful looking chute and it appears its a solid straight line 6-8 entry with minimal room for error. A few others had congregated at the entry to the chute. I offered to go second....a snowboarder got to the lip of the drop off and squealed the "oh sh**" before deciding he wanted to turn back around. I proceeded to go a little further where I got myself in a sticky line, the only out was a guaranteed edge job or a 8 foot huck...since the snow was deep, I opted for the leap. I still want to figure out how to access some of these lines safely...........
Went over to Mineral Basin around 12 PM and found insanely untracked lines. I was surprised that it had been skiied over so little. There was a little bit of crust in some areas, but some parts skied beautifully. A real treat. Took about 3 lines down Mineral (high stakes/ Not quite corn) before heading to Baldy lift. I skiied over to the far side of the resort boundary (Sugar Cliffs area) and found more beautiful untracked lines. Was shocked considering it was close to 1 pm. I took about 5 glorious laps over there until I ran out of steam at around 2:15.
Headed over to Alf's to hydrate and see if there was a Admin sighting....no such luck...
Skied down and took the 3:06 bus out of LCC.
Another glorious day in the Wasatch.
