Day 51
My mother was in town for the holiday from back East, and The Kid and I joined here atop Hidden Peak for Snowbird's sunrise service. Or, rather, for Snowbird's Socked-In Service -- a cap cloud clung to the peak for nearly the whole event. A cold wind howled and blew snow, forcing many to huddle around the two bonfires built for the occasion. We did, however, enjoy a beautiful view of the morning sun over Baldy and hitting Superior, even if we never saw the sun rise above the horizon ourselves.
Unlike other similar services I've been to in the past, they wouldn't let us ski down, so we caught the first tram back down the mountain for a hearty breakfast at the Forklift before I dispatched Mom to a comfy leather couch at The Cliff while The Kid and I took a few runs.
The wet snow from the day before had refrozen, alright. Anything that had been groomed early in the evening set up rock solid. We skied down to Gadzoom (The Kid had a chairs-only ticket), and up Little Cloud to drop into Mineral Basin, which in the flat light was challenging to see. No fog, just overcast. We rode back up MBE and down Chip's all the way to the base, stopping by the gelande jump to check things out.
It would be a few hours before things would even begin to soften, and I didn't feel like leaving Mom there, so I headed home to do the taxes.
