Day 62: Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start to summer...right? Isn't it?

It sure wasn't at Snowbird today. Gone were the days of blazing sun in the 60s from last weekend. Gone too, though, were the fresh 17 inches of snow that fell Thursday. Gone as well was our corn cycle.

What we were left with today were winter-like temperatures on top, spring-like temperatures at the bottom, and nothing but balls of mashed potatoes in between. Add to that that just about everything slid. And I mean everything! North Baldy is one giant slide zone, with a massive alluvial fan of debris exiting Eye of the Needle. All of Eddie's Snowfield slid. All of Memorial Buttress slid. All of Mid-Cirque slid. Good luck finding anything with pitch that hadn't slid.

As a result I just wasn't feeling it and quit around 12:30. In between we took a run into Mineral Basin (socked in and spitting snow), a run over toward Puckerbrush (but we bailed into Mid-Cirque for softer snow), and a few groomers off Peruvian.

Even Bobby Danger left early, and when that happens, well...

Yep, in May you gotta get it the first day. In this situation Mammoth will groom the hell out of it after the first day, but I know that's not how it works at the more minimalist spring operation at Snowbird.

No sympathy here. Next weekend you'll have the corn and Mammoth will be closed.

well there's not alot of grooming to begin with any time of the year thank god . i mean you take a cat out across the hill and ruin it during the regular season. this time of year snowbird needs to provide easy axcess to the base for the beginners they pay alot of the bills.certainley the majority of the folks on the hill are pass holders and this is snowbirds way of saying thank you to pass holders. i'm sure alta would do the same if they could renegotiate there contract with the forest service. there's still so much snow up there you'd be blown away if you were here coping with it the way we are. 8) 8) 8)

After skiing we all got together last night for a triple-birthday dinner (Bobby Danger, Skidog and Tirolerpeter) at Café Trang downtown. Peter asked me to post this photo on his behalf.
