Day 61:

I had a fruitful morning. I got up at 7:30, got the summer tires put on the Z3 (gee...June 10 seems like high time to get that done, huh? ), then I went home, put the top down, threw the skis in the passenger seat, and headed up canyon to Snowbird at a much quicker pace than I usually do in the truck.

Waiting for me in the parking lot at 10:45 was Marc_C. We opted to spot a vehicle at Goldminer's Daughter at Alta, so we didn't board the tram until the 11:30 run, and the snow loss visible from both the parking lot and the tram was remarkable. Some lines that Bob and I had skied just last weekend were now snowless piles of bushes. It's funny what valley temps in the 90s for an extended period, and heavy thunderstorms over the past couple of days will do to a snowpack.

We decided to repeat a variation of what Bob and I had done each day last weekend: ski one tram lap, then head for Baldy to ski into Alta. No longer is snow continuous from the top of the tram to reach where the Mid-Cirque gate is, and the Mid-Cirque Traverse -- skiable just 6 days ago -- is now snowless. It was at that point that we opted for a route that I can't share on a public forum, but let's just say that it skied mighty fine. We eventually ran out of snow, though, and had to downhike through about 300 vertical feet of tangled scrub oak to return to the tram.

We stuck to our plan. With the bare earthen Chip's road and a plan to hike in hiking boots, Marc_C started hiking right from the tram dock, while I opted to ski down a few feet before running out of snow and packing skis myself. It was a far more arduous hike today to reach the summit of Mount Baldy, as now it's over loose rock instead of over snow. Before long, however, we were taking a breather on top as Marc_C changed from hiking boots to ski boots.

Cover remains continuous top-to-bottom at Alta. Our route was a familiar one: Main Chute to Harold's to Schuss Gully. We had to briefly take off our skis at the angle station, where the snow has been removed, but aside from that it was a non-stop run right to Alta's admin building.

I'll let the pictures do the talking. Now, I'm afraid that the effort really isn't worth it anymore IMO. My Utah ski season is therefore over. Tomorrow I'll hit an air show at Hill AFB featuring the Thunderbirds instead of skiing, and I've got one more day on snow later this month on Mt. Hood.

Do you have to watch for wet slides - especially in Main Chute - if skiing after noon? How stable is it?

Right now, like a rock.

Great report and pictures, as always.

You are not alone....

My winter tires came off on Friday June 9th.

Havent been on snow since March, however I did waterski 2 weeks ago!

Windsurfing could have begun this weekend but the water and air temps were both around 50. I just didn't have it in me the first day out to manage 25knot winds.

Now, that not being very serious isn't it.

OR maybe it's still skiing that isn't very serious if I listen to what my mother says.

You guys are truly "hard core." I am sooo.... looking forward to moving to SLC to play in the snow!

Welcome to Liftlines, tirolerpeter. Are there moving plans in the works?

I didn't make it up this past weekend...I pretty much called it a season here...but Bob Dangerous went up Sunday and reported it pretty much the same as we saw the weekend before. He made one run in the 'Bird and one Main Chute run into Alta.

Coincidentally on Saturday a friend from Denver gave me a call and asked if he and is climbing/ski mountaineering partner could stay at our house Sunday night. They were on their way back from having climbed Mt. Shasta...and skiing 7000 vert. of perfect corn.....raving about it being one of the best runs of his life.

So for those who ask "...what are they doing in the East..." - all it takes is a simple decision.

Can somebody tell me what am I doing in the east?

Yup: turning green with envy in 3... 2... 1...

Lucky Luke location is pretty good, he lives 5-10 minutes from the parking lot at Bromont, maybe 30 minutes from Sutton, Owl's Head, Jay and Orford. 1hour from Smuggs and Stowe???

2h45 minutes from Pinkham Notch. :P

However Jonny, Toronto might be a great city for entainment, but it certainly hell for an avid skier. You need drive a whole day before you get the equivalent in vertical of Bromont.

Entertainment is lost on me... all I need are friends and a place to watch some Hockey/Baseball on TV, a beer and some wings. And yes, Since it's toronto, I can't afford to actually GO to the hockey games... $150 for bad seats and the thrill of watching your team not care enough to win.

I gotta be crazy to live here.... oh wait... I've been crazy my whole life.

Note that Lucky Luke has an optimal location in the East and he's the one posing the question .....

I suspect he would agree with my statement last year that a less than ideal western location like L.A. is still better than anywhere in the East from a skiing perspective.

Maybe, but I think he likes living and playing in the snow. He couldn't snowshoe or ski from his front door in LA.

TO couldn't be worse than living in Carolina, a place were getting good seats on game day for the hockey playoffs is as easy as buying milk at the corner store.

Go Habs Go

Hockey trivia:

The team that has eliminated the Montreal Canadiens in the last 3 playoffs have either made the final or won the Stanley Cup, what other team can say that? Not Ottawa.

2002 - Carolina
2004 - Tampa Bay (winner)
2006 - Carolina (winner)

Thank for trying to encourage me. I know that I'm not in such a bad place. I can hike, snowshoe, ride my mountain bike from my door. I live 5 minutes from one of the best night skiing area in North America and 45 minutes from nices mountains. I live on a mountain (that I love) instead of a city (that I hate) and I guess that I only miss skiing all year round, even if I like all of the four seasons. Tony, I would never live in a big city that's not really close (1 hour drive) to big mountains. But that's because I don't like big citys, but I would accomodate living in Calgary or Salt Lake I guess. Keep on posting nices pics of the West, it keeps me dreaming (at least).
