All I have to say it what a tremendous day over at the Bird, also I guess I was wrong about saying I didn?t see anymore snow coming last night. 16 inches of new snow which skied very very well, nice and deep all day long.
Our day started at 9:15 am and we headed straight over to Mineral Basin. Light snow was still falling but light was still good, those of you who ski over there know it can get pretty socked in on powder days but today was bit of an exception. We hopped right onto Lone Star; it was awesome and a great indicator of things to come. I'd guess the snow was probably about 12-20 inches deep in most spots.
We did laps in the Basin until Patrol had completed their explosive avalanche control work of the Bookends. Three maybe four laps were done out in the Bookends, each time heading further and further out, which to be honest probably wasn?t necessary since we were passing up tons of untracked goods. On our final lap which we took out all the way to the end of the boundry area may have been the run of the year! On our first run out I was fortunate enough to have blown by one of the Snowbird Photographers who called out a number as I blew by him (see pictures below).
After we got our fill of the Bookends the sun started to come out and the ropes just happened to drop on Little Cloud Bowl. We decided to pass up on the initial drop in and instead we headed all the way out to the Gad Valley. Here the snow was good just not as deep as it was over in Mineral, but still skied exceptionally well. Next trip up we noticed people were traversing all the way out to the Gad II lift. All though the traverse was long and the snow was starting to get a bit heavy the trip was well worth it. Since the area?s lifts are now closed for the season and only few were willing to make the long traverse out there the place was virtually untracked. Unfortunately, I didn?t take any pictures over here because we decided to just rip it from top to bottom our final destination being the car parked down at the base of Gadzoom.
After unloading our skis it was time to have a drink and grab a late lunch (2:45pm) over on the Plaza Deck. The question at hand; which was better the Bookends or Gad II? None of us could decide. One thing we could decided on was an 8 am departure from Park City tomorrow morning to see what Alta has to offer.
