Snowbird Expansion Plan-Your thoughts?

I just read the firsttracks article. Am I wrong in the assumption that this new terrain would be East/South Facing?

Personally, I'm not sure I would like the lift tix prices to rise to access predominantly east/south facing terrain. Also, it seems ridiculous to offer night skiing at place like Snowbird. The only thing I really like in the proposal was the additional beginner terrain. It is sorely need there, as my wife felt very over matched by that mountain, and I would assume she isn't alone in that assessment.

No she's not: http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/973 ... ermediates

However Nikki did not appear "overmatched" given that she looked comfortable linking turns on Regulator Johnson, which even at Snowbird is rated single black. The writer of the above article lives in Miami and had skied 3 days lifetime before spending a late March week at Snowbird on the advice of a plurality of that Forum plus assurances from Snowbird's marketing department. He was indeed overmatched and his wife blew an ACL on the trip.

I agree with you, but she did have moments where she was quite scared. I think so much of skiing is about mental, and just the look of Snowbird is intimidating. I also think blacks and blues are steeper at Snowbird than at many other places, I could be wrong though. For her it would've been nice if there had been more greens that weren't just cat walks.

I hate to sound like Marc here....(you know us "c" Marc's just got to stick together)....but this is just another reason why, IMHO, I'd rather ski Alta.

Nikki much preferred Alta. She felt the blues there were mellower, and we didn't have to spend anytime on greens.

I agree on the relative comfort level of intermediates on Alta blues vs. Snowbird blues. Nonetheless I believe Alta skis like a small area if you're not willing to go off trail. That said, there are off trail areas at both mountains where Nikki should be comfortable. Ballroom comes immediately to mind.

I've seen my fair share of scared skiers. They hesitate to make that first turn. They lean up into the hill. They make one turn at a time, zigzagging across the hill, often getting stuck at the edge of the groomed part. I saw Nikki ski for a day and a half and she did none of the above that I saw.

Snowbird hasn't opened pipeline yet this year.

Mary Ellen already gets demo'd by the Powder Birds.

I wonder if they gates to WP will be near permanent closures like the Gad2 gate and pipeline hike?

mary ellen gulch in my opinion is the next logical step in growing snowbird to it's fullest potential . snowbird has run into massive opposition to any sort of development in white pine canyon . i've skied mary ellen gulch in the past many times (a.k.a. future bird) and beleive you me no one would ever be dissappointed by any sort of venture in there . it's twice the size of mineral basin in acreage . as salida pointed out no pipe line or white pine or american forks twin peaks gate on the road to prove will more than likely not open at all for the rest of the season due to the m.l.k. rain layer . and yes to rfarren about steepness at the bird - single black diamond runs at snowbird are steeper than most any other resort , cause their rating system for degree of diffaculty is not in comparison to other resorts but to the acreage available .
