Snowbird extends ski season

Last year was June 15. 2005 was July 4 after they bumped the closing date back about 3 times. I don't recall 2006 although I know it was in June, but 2007 being a mildly disappointing year, it was in late May IIRC.

2007 was the 3rd lowest snowfall year in LCC in my 40+ years of records. 300+ inches was enough for a normal regular season but its quite unlikely that there was much of a June snowpack. Mammoth made it to Memorial weekend in 2007, but it was sketchy and they had to do a lot of work to keep the Main Lodge ski accessible.

I suspect current LCC snowpack is similar to 2005, so if Snowbird doesn't run to July 4 it will be due to economics IMHO. Mammoth's snowpack is not what it was in 2005, but it did run to July 4 with similar snowpacks in 1980 and 1986. Mammoth announced a few years ago that it will only stay open as long as the Main Lodge is ski accessible. In July 1986 only the upper mountain was skiable with gondola for access.

Alta's total 10/24/06 to 4/23/07 was 401.5 inches.

While totals are nearly identical, we had more snow on the ground at this time in 2005 thanks to a very cool and wet April and May.

October snow in 2006-07 would have been irrelevant. Snowbird, the area that is actually open, had only 316 inches in 2006-07.

April/May might have been cool in 2005, but the 141.5 inches of Alta snowfall this April was a record for the month.

Nonetheless observable snowpack is the key, and admin and the locals say it's lower this year. I suspect the difference is much less than in the Sierra though.

Alta snowfall 10/2006 was only 14".

Agreed, as Snowbird's snowfall is typically lower than Alta's, but Alta's daily numbers are the only ones at my fingertips.

True, but it also matters immensely if it's predominantly sunny, dry and in the 70s on the mountain in May, or cold and stormy.
