After a lot, well, a little thought, I've decided on Snowbird for a late January ski week. I'm guessing decent snow at Snowbird in late January is a safe bet, no? How convenient/inconvenient is it to stay in SLC or in South Towne. Lodging is pretty reasonable there as opposed to the mountain lodging.

about 8 years ago i stayed in SLC with no car. we utilized the slick bus transportation they had that brought you right to cottonwood canyon and then got a transfer ticket to take another bus up to snowbird. i forget the cost, but it wasn't much. stayed at a LaQuina Inn.

ya. safe bet for conditions there now, nevermind late January. enjoy!

Should be OK...if you don't get the dreaded temperature inversion in January as often happens there. If you do, prepare for old, rotten snow, but plenty of it.

Utah is the warmest area of the Rockies, so the worst case scenario is a warmup to spring conditions followed by a cooloff without new snow. However the north-facing steeps (upper half of Peruvian Gulch, Upper Cirque, Little Cloud Bowl and much of Gad 2) will not turn to spring conditions until much later in the year as they have practically no direct sun. Snowbird is the best area to be in Utah if it hasn't snowed in a while, as long as the base is adequate. And this year the base will not be a problem. Avoid Mineral Basin if it hasn't snowed recently.

You have a good idea for your stay if you need to keep a tight budget. The bus links to both Cottonwood Canyons from the south valley are great. Motels in the South Town Mall (?) area in Sandy are well located. I would suggest going to the UTA website for the exact routes and times. You also have the option of skiing Alta, Solitude, and Brighten just as easily as Snowbird. Also, there are a number of ski shops in the area. Check with them and the motel for discount lift tickets to save a few more bucks.

I have done this kind of trip twice in the last four years and it works out well. I stay at the sister-in-law motel across the Interstate in So. Jordan, and get a ride to the bus stop ea morning. It's not exactly that mountain ambience, but if I had to pay for that I couldn't afford to go. I was just checking the airlines today for a mid Feb trip. Good luck.
