Snowbird, UT 1/10

Read admin's post on Alta from today, sounds a lot like the Bird. Roads opened late (no surprise), still got up on the hill by like 9:30. Tram closed. Little Cloud closed. Peruvian closed. Mineral closed. We had seen this on Snowbird's site but had hoped it would change. It never did, except Peruvian did open around 11-ish.....to massive crowds. Meanwhile, all the Gad lifts were zoos. Tiger Tail was gone in 45 minutes or less. I had to hit a gulley to the right of it to find fresh. Lapped Wilbere a couple times, but I didn't drive 6 hours from Vegas to lap Wilbere haha. Moved on to Peruvian once it was open and there were fresh lines to be had the rest of the day, but 20 minute lift lines persisted until around 1:30.

The Cool Whip traverse was like a super highway. Never seen so many people on that. They used it to get nice shots off lower cirque, but upper cirque was off limits all day, and being a boarder, I didn't want to clog the Cool Whip on the uphill parts. Heard rumors of a tram car hitting a tower, and of 100 mph gusts at the top. My tip of the day: when everyone is making a hard left around a corner to start the Cool Whip traverse, head straight into the chute, make a quick traverse left, and straight line into a short, protected chute of awesomeness.

How was the snow? Deep and fluffy in the trees, wind-scoured up top, except where wind deposits had built up variable piles of churned powder. Chutes (what few there were available) had nice snow deposits, and lasted longer than expected. Mach Schnell/Dalton's Draw area rode really well, slightly low tide in the Mach area. Phone Shot 3/Blackjack rode extremely well. Groomers are in great shape, some small vestiges of bumps from last week but the snow is very rippable where it's not ravaged by the wind. And apparently no one laps Wilbere, so go there to escape crowds. Good snow.

Some employees I shared the lift with say Monday will be killer at the Bird. My advice to anyone going this weekend: hope to God they open at least Little Cloud. And when Mineral finally opens, it will be epic.

Tomorrow? Hoping to find somewhere to escape the wind. I heard on Facebook that Powderhorn and Honeycomb never opened at Solitude. There were lines! At Solitude! So we are at a loss for where to go. Solitude is usually our weekend check for no lines, but the wind is supposed to continue tomorrow.

Actually the road was open at 7:30 when I first checked. At around 8:15 they closed at B Gate but only for about 15 minutes. I barely got caught at B Gate but I was still in the Wildcat lot at Alta at 8:45, 30 minutes before the ski area was scheduled to open.

I was basing it off of the canyonalerts site, which updated at like 8:45 with "LCC is open". Maybe they are slow to update the site. Either way, the road was far from the worst part of today......

Agreed! You've also noticed that the canyonalerts.org site isn't updated timely, and you're correct - it unfortunately is not. Some days (like today) I suspect that it's deliberately delayed to help avoid the crush.
