Day 30: Day 3 of Kristen Ulmer's Ski to Live clinic

I bagged the 7 a.m. yoga session in favor of sleeping an extra two hours. It did me good.

It was yet another powder day, but with cold and wind added to the mix. The Tram remained on wind hold all day, as did Little Cloud and all of Mineral Basin, so where do you go on a storm day? Gad 2, of course!

Adam was our coach today, and once again the hard-charging group set off in search of the goods. We skied down to Gadzoom and headed straight for Gad 2. Once again the runs were a blur, but we skied Lower Tigertail, then headed back up for STH before finding the upper Tiger Tail gate surprisingly opened. We therefore traversed way, way out into Thunder Bowl for the goods, which opened up a whole new line for me that I previously didn't know.

We lunched at 1:30 or so, and by the time we finished at 2 the cold and wind had both become sufficiently intense that only Wendy and Chardel headed back up (Mike did so, too, but only to reach his truck parked on the Alta Bypass Road). The rest of us headed to the rooftop hot tub at the Cliff Spa, then showered at the spa to go to the evening workshop.

During the workshop a full-on blizzard ensued. Visibility dropped to near zero in heavy snow. 4x4/chain restrictions went up in the canyon, and Hellgate closed. It was a white-knuckle drive down, with one car over the edge near Entry 1. I-80 eastbound into Parley's Canyon is closed even as I type this, even though nothing of any consequence fell in the Salt Lake Valley. Tomorrow will be another good day!

That where I should have been...

That whole Tigertail/Thunder Bowl area is the favorite of Ed Meisner, one of the Iron Blosam timesharers since 1981. But you had more powder than I've ever had out there...

Kristen Ulmer seems to rock!

I read about her ski weekends -- and they seem really interesting. She gets written up in Ski/Skiing and I read some her La Grave articles.

I am generally not allowed near Yoga classes with friends - or a direction by teacher not to come back. I find it problematic not to laugh in Downward Dog for time #19.

I do not know Snowbird/Alta well enough to comment of all of the spots. I do know I like it a lot.

I am more for a hike around Baldy than Tiger. Although runs off skiers left on the traverse get me everytime.

It looks like from the short lines on the Suunto chart around noon that you took a couple of runs on Baby Thunder. Not surprising in view of deteriorating weather.

Our group does Tigertail a lot more than Baldy. Baldy is more subject to closure, and by our week in March it will have sun effect if it hasn't snowed for a few days. But I would like to ski Baldy more than I have in the past.

Those Baby Thunder laps were due to fortuitous timing of a rope drop on a swath of untracked.

I'll strive to include Sunday's report into tonight's activities - I'm both swamped and exhausted - but the short version is sun/powder/cold/vicious wind.
