This was the 2nd day of our 3-day Alta/Snowbird trip. My first day ever at Snowbird.

It was the first full day after the 36" storm. Fairly crowded (apparently the SLC schools were out today). Had 15-25 minute waits our first two times up the tram.

Primrose Path and Silver Fox still had enjoyable snow a day after the storm.

Mineral Basin had a delayed opening, so when that finally opened (for the first time since the storm) we quickly headed over. Of course, everyone else at the resort had the same bright idea. We were probably 20 minutes past the opening, and already much of the basin was tracked. But it was still easy to find untracked (but surprisingly a little heavy) powder as we went down Silver Dipper. At the bottom we were greeted by a 15-20 minute line to ride back up Mineral Basin Express. After that we decided to stay on the main side.

The Cirque was very nice, despite being well skied. My skis got baptized with a few new knicks navigating the rocks along the top traverse, but once you dropped into one of the chutes all was well.

We spent the rest of the day lapping the tram--after the early-morning rush the tram was basically walk-up the rest of the day. The snow held up well all day. One of the things I really like about Snowbird is that you can ski black down the full 3000' vertical. I'll be back here again.

A not-uncommon reaction to many an advanced skier's first visit to Snowbird. :D

You must've overlooked the parts about Mineral getting tracked out in 20 min. and 25-30 minute liftlines. ;-)

It was his first day at Snowbird, he'll learn his way around soon enough. Alta is no picnic on a big day for first-timers either.

Well, I certainly don't want to open up an Alta vs. Snowbird can of worms here. Both are great, and are uniquely different. On a basic level, both have the same incredible light powder. I know Alta gets slightly more snowfall in general, and I sense it will hold it's powder (in places) somewhat longer than the Bird. I certainly haven't skied either enough to make much judgement (although I've been to Alta 4-5 times over the past 20 yrs), but I have some thoughts.

Likes about Snowbird:

-- great snow
--3000' skiable vertical off the tram
-- big resort, plently of variety, plenty of challenge

Dislikes about Snowbird:

-- seems to get more crowded than Alta

Likes about Alta:

-- great snow
-- no snowboards!
-- a little older crowd
-- more laid-back, intimate
-- true finds (trailwise) if you work to find them

Dislikes about Alta:

-- none to date
