Day 66: April powder arrives

Our first real April storm has finally arrived. We were right at the rain/snow line when things kicked off around 11 am at the house (5000'), then quickly went to all wet, heavy snow. I've got a couple of inches here at the house, and decided to venture to Snowbird late this afternoon for a couple of quick laps on Peruvian.

I'm guessing there's about six inches up there, with another 8-18 inches forecast overnight and tomorrow before the storm winds down. Today wasn't enough to hide the crust of the refrozen old snow underneath, but was enough to barely hide the few rocks poking through in some of the more out-of-the-way places. Tricky going, where the low angle stuff was far better than steeper lines. Tomorrow should be a great day at Snowbird, the only Utah ski area operating Thursday, and I should be at Alta when it reopens on Friday - hopefully skiing big storm totals.

Total runs: 2
Total time: 0:50:35
Total verts: 4930
Total pics: 0 - you couldn't see jack

Yes, Utah has missed out so far on what has been a fairly normal April in terms of western snow, notably the 3 feet early in the month at the I-70 Colorado areas. Mammoth is supposed to get something the next couple of days before my likely last trip this weekend, on top of the 12 inches last Sunday.

Not so sure we are going to get that 12-24 the NWS was calling for. I keep checking the radars and I just don't see enough precip for us to get another 12-14 inches tonight. Trust me I'm hoping but I have a feeling this is just going to be another dissapointing storm for the Wasatch. I'm thinking maybe another 4-6 at most tonight. Lets all say a little prayer. Either way I'll be at the Bird by 9am.

This gap in snowfall was actually predicted, between the initial storm and the lake effect. We just need to hope that the lake effect kicks in as predicted.
