In search of snow....
It started with a facebook picture from a friend who climbed Throop Peak on 6-15.
There looked to be a line still going down to the road.[/B]

So we rallied on Sunday to find some turns locally.
The road has been closed longer than usual because of this landslide. It kept quite a few people from making it back to where the snow still is.

We were asked why we had skis? I thought about that myself???? Big Tim explained to them that we were looking for the rare "White Breasted Linked Turn".
They were lucky enough to also see it.

Of course we had to do some Pine Cone skiing between that white stuff.
Corey getting after it.

Throop Peak was one of Samantha's hikes July 4, 2009. Skiing is better in San Gorgonio but of course the access is a PITA compared to the Angeles Crest. When did Dawson Summit become car acccessible?

Admin,I will pass along the info to him.He comes over to this site for up to date local news in our area. This site is one of the best for that info:)

Tony,I was thinking about Samantha`s yearly trip reports you made on this hike while we were doing it....RIP. The road opened the weekend before with little fanfare.I found out it was open from a Facebook posting on the Wednesday before our hike.
The road is dangerous right now/motorcycles crashing everywhere.
Life Flight flew down our chute to get a biker that crashed at the bottom of our run.

Then we were stopped for a bike over the side on the way home.

I used to ride my motorcycle up there every weekend and never had any issues. Not sure what the problem is now..

The story of so many road openings. If Caltrans would plow the Crest over Dawson Summit in late April or so, I'd sure be tempted to give it a shot given the convenience. With my new gear it would be much easier than my 2 recent backcountry forays.
