So what's Baldy gonna be like?

With this cold dry snow, I don't imagine much of a base is going to be laid down- wondering how conditions will be once they get open, and if Chair 4 (and more importantly Chair 1) will be rideable without the snowmaking Thunder now has.

I'll probably head up Saturday regardless, but I'm expecting bony conditions in the trees and a 2+ hour drive down the hill past what will surely be record amounts of snowplayers.

yeh, its a bit of a shaky deal. the itch to ski has to be fulfilled soon and i cant wait til mammoth in two weeks so its either baldy or the better snowmaking mountain high east, but thats a longer drive and will be more crowded than baldy especially on a saturday. i think baldy might be a go for me on friday and may not be too bad if they have enough lifts open and if this storm hits like its supposed.

I think Aukai has it right. I would be inclined toward Big Bear this weekend if I were here, but I'm going to Mammoth.

I think this was the base for Baldy. Another 2 feet and I would go, but my understanding is that the upcoming storm is much smaller than the last one.

I got $2 that says there is an avalanche in, near, or around baldy. Some idiot is going to try to ski the backcountry and set it off and get himself in trouble. Any takers?

You are correct in that having that kind of terrain so accessible from L.A. has resulted in avalanche deaths in the past. I don't think there is quite enough snow yet for people to go wandering off into the dangerous places.

I'm also not so sure that Baldy (2-3 feet new over bare ground) is as dangerous as Mammoth, LCC etc. where we have the classic weak snow layer from a month of drought under a bunch of fresh snow.

Ok... I rescind my bet. Thanks Tony!!! You saved me a beer, or at least 2/3 of a beer here in Brooklyn.

Snow report sez Chair 1 runs open to the parking lot.

I'M THERE, DUDE.

One of two things will happen on Saturday.

What I hope: Powdery goodness to the lot abounds, deep enough to bury unseen hazards, freshies and stoke prevail all around, slippery roads keep the snowplayers off the mountain, the beer is as cold as the fine San Gabriel air, and everything will be perfect forever.

What I bet: Rock jibbing is the order of the day, spun-out chainless snow-gawking flatlanders make the drive up and down nearly unbearable, the line for the one frazzled employee at the ticket window will reach Manker Flats, the average number of 30 minute chair breakdowns per attempted ride up will vary between 2-3, and I'll need to buy a new snowboard and invest in P-Tex stock at the end of the day. All this, of course, will be negated by the beer, still cold as the fine San Gabriel air.

I'll set the alarm clock Saturday for some ungodly witching hour, plan on staking a place near the front of the ticket line, and hope for the former possibility. Maybe I'll see some of you kooks up there.

ima be there friday hopefully to catch the foot of new pow this most recent storm( the one going on right now) brought in. im off til jan. 5th so im in mammoth the day after christmas and gunna have to get snow chains tomorrow. always a good sign  im hoping that the first snow that landed sunday and monday has alredy created some sort of base
