Since winter in the northeast is having trouble getting started and I'm not a fan of WROD skiing, today was Day 1 for me and conditions were far better than I had expected. Apparently, all the small snowfalls have been adding up because coverage is quite good (especially compared to last year) and we found soft snow all over the mountain. While there was a bit of crust on certain pitches, it was easily avoided.

Unsurprisingly, the best snow was off the Summit lift, where it snowed consistently a good part of the day. Honeycomb Canyon is open; however, it can only be accessed from the Summit gate right now.

We had a rain event at lower elevations a week or two ago. That has a lot to do with why the best snow today was off Summit -- the higher you go the less liquid and more frozen precip there was. It's not a sharp line, either, it's more of a transition. According to Marc_C, who has skied both Solitude and Alta in recent days it's noticeable at lower elevations at Solitude, while I can tell you from personal experience that it's not at Alta (Solitude's base elevation is just a little bit lower than Alta's).

Looking forward to skiing with you again this weekend!

I guess there is no need for me to sweat out conditions.

Especially because there's less snow right now in BCC than in LCC. James' days will only get better.

P.S.: You shoulda gone to Snowbird today. While Mineral Basin wasn't supposed to open for the season until tomorrow they couldn't wait and dropped the rope this afternoon. Those who were there got a whole season-to-date of untracked snow for their trouble. Must've been orgasmic.

Huh? I've been at Solitude every Saturday and Sunday they've been open this season, I skied Snowbird today. The coverage at Solitude is every bit as good as Snowbird. There are a few places at Solitude that are still closed, just like I found at Snowbird. I also didn't find any less ice at Snowbird today as I've been seeing at Solitude.

The new Little Cloud is pretty nice, sure gets you up a lot faster than the old one!

Give me a holler James, didn't know you were here in town.

I didn't say Snowbird in particular, even though that would have been true, too. Precisely what I said was, "there's less snow right now in BCC than in LCC." That's a simple issue of facts, not opinion:

Alta: 46"
Snowbird: 45"
Solitude: 32"

Hence there's more snow in LCC than where James has been skiing in BCC... which is what I said.

Perhaps I should've more pointed out the part of your quote I took issue with, the James day's will only get better part. I'll let James chime in when he has experience with skiing in both canyons. I'd say it's about sixes, the extra snow that Alta and Snowbird claim seems to have been beaten into submission by the extra crowds they also receive. If we're talking about coverage and terrain available I'd put the two canyons about equal.

Either is skiing pretty well, a heck of a lot better than last season!

And I should have been more specific as well, for in large part I was also referring to the snow in the weather forecast before he leaves.
