With low temps predicted to be in the teens, I was concerned about how the last person to use my family's South Tahoe cabin had shut off water, so I quickly packed and got out of San Jose about 2 pm on Monday. The storm that dropped over an inch of rain in San Jose seemed to be over in South Bay, but it started raining again as I went up the Sierra foothills, including some very heavy downpours in a couple of places. It turned to snow below 6000' and there was snow on the road as I cautiously descended to Meyers, where chain control was being enforced going the other way.
There was a couple of inches of slushy slow at our cabin less than a mile from the stateline. A friend who was working on Kingsbury Grade (near Heavenly's NV bases) reported two feet while Heavenly's snowcam had 15". There was chain control on 207 after 1 pm when I went a very little way up it to a hardware store that had parts that hopefully eliminated problem with very old sink faucets. My dogs had a great time running in the snow crossing meadows on the way to Nevada Beach. But they got so wet and dirty that I did not want them back in cabin so I cleaned and picked the place up while they waited on porch them drove home. I missed the $10/one beginner lift and run opening day at Mt. Rose on 11/4.
