Did a superb 15 km backcountry / x-c ski run on the outskirts of St. John's, Newfoundland. Although not right alongside the ocean, I did get several nice views of the ocean and islands.

I did nearly the same route last weekend, and at that time I thought it would be my final ski of the season. However, this past week was unseasonably cold, with snow nearly every day accumulating 6-8 inches. The new snow was compacted down to an inch or so of proto-corn, nicely covering up the dirty, icy snow on the narrow trails. It was sticky slow, but gave good traction for the uphill portions. A pair of moose had recently walked over much of the trail leaving huge postholes. I skated many of the parts of the main trail that had been packed down by the snowmobiles.

There's still 1-3 feet of snow, but it will melt quickly with any warm temps. It started snowing when I finished, so who knows, maybe I'll get in another week? Tomorrow I'm hoping to get in some turns at the local ski hill, the Logy Bay Lump. I've never skied at the Lump. There is a rope tow with at most 100 feet of vertical. The tow has stopped operating for the season, despite there still being skiable snow.
